Show STUDENT LIFE THE IRRIGATION CONGRESS The National Irrigation Con- gress which opened its session in the big Tabernacle in Salt Lake City Monday morning was the greatest gathering ever held in Utah The immense Tabernacle was taxed to its capacity hundreds being forced to stand throughout the services The entire Tabernacle choir consisting of five hundred voices was in attendance and supplemented by a full orchestra all under the able leadership of Professor McClellan they made an impression upon the visitors which will proe life long The ladies in the choir were all becomingly dressed in white and the men in black dress suits The effect made up a picture hard to duplicate Miss Lucille Franke who had been selected as Queen of Irrigation and Empress of Valleys attended by her retinue made up a most pleasing picture and she performed her part of the Ceremony with grace and becoming dignity The speeches throughout were of a thoroughly practical nature and the first gathering of the Congress in Salt Lake City is bound to result in unmeasured good to the agriculturists ol the entire world General Marshall the personal representative of President Taft was present and gave a message of greeting from the President The musical selections were all of the very highest order and were interspersed at most pleasing intervals serving to relieve what might otherwise have appeared business-likatmosphere By far tile chief feature of the morning session and the one that brought out most visitors was the rendition of the irrigation ode by the Tabernacle choir and the enlarged orchestia under the direction of Professor McClellan The words of this ode were written by Mrs MeClere and the music for the same was composed by Professor McClellan who was born and reared in Utah The visitors were profoundly impressed with the majestic strains of the ode and all pronounced it to be one of the most remarkable musical renditions which they bad ever had the privilege of hearing The electrical parade which made up the crowning feature of the first day’s Congress was without doubt the most remarkable procession ever arranged in the entire e Inter-mountai- n repcountry Numerous floats resenting the various counties of the State were entered in the procession One of the most striking features of the parade was the splendid appearance of the troups from Fort Douglas under the command of Colonel Irons A special order of the Wjar Department had been secured by which the troops were ordered to participate in the procession and their appearance was one which impressed profoundly various The the spectators floats arranged by the various Jcounties each supplemented by a bevy of beautiful young women were entirely original in their conception and with the burst of electric light which accompanied each they made up an effect most artistic to the onlooker The second day’s session of the Congress was given over entirely to the business of the Congress and among the addresses given was one by President John A Wid-tso- e of the Utah Agricultural College in which he presented data bearing upon the duty of water which was of profound interest to the delegates of the Congress The Congress closed its session with the afternoon meeting 'Wednesday of this week A roll of the various delegates present shows that representatives had been sent from many of the smaller civilized nations of the world Delegates in native costume were also in attendance from far off Persia and attracted conEach of siderable attention them seemed to manifest intense interest in the entire Congress Due to the influx of visitors to the Congress ami to the State Fair which had just opened its exposition as well as to the Mormon Conference which opens in the Salt Lake City capacity of the hotels was overtaxed ami most urgent appeal has been made to the people to throw open their homes to the incoming visitors All in all it has been a splendid opportunity for bringing Utah and her wonderful before the attention of the people of the entire world and it has been one of whieh our citizens have not failed to take advantage " PAGE SEVEN Miss Phoebe Nebeker a former going through North Logan and student of the College and last Hyde Park A round trip is made Domestic every two hours and a special year instructor in weekly rate is offered to students Science at the B Y C has gistered at the U A C as member of the class of 1013 re- — 4— a Freshman reading first number of STUDENT LIFE in puzrow of zled tones: Three-dee- p Miss Ella Stewart for some August Dignitaries!?
