Show U A C Victorious at Provo Hillman and barrel! win our tirt The first inter-collegia- te debate 2 to debate in which the U A C has partici- pated since the memorable B Y C-A C debate of May 1903 took place at Provo on May 7 This was the initial debate of the U new Utah Inter-Collegia- te Debat- ing League which is composed of teams representing the B Y C B Y U and U A C and was certainly an auspicious opening It was generally conceded by all present that this debate was one of the cleanest cut and showed the best all round preparedness of the numerous debates which have taken place in Utah during the past several years The question under discussion was Resolved that the policy of the United States in the Philippines should be directed towards the ultimate independence of those islands The affirmative was upheld by the U A C represented by R C Hillman and F D Farrell and the B Y U argued for the negative J R Robinson and John Nuttal were Provo’s representatives The judges were Supt of Salt Lake City Schools D H Christensen Prof Mosiah Hall of the L D S U and Mr A C I Matheson of the state superintendProf Swendson ency of schools B of the Y U presided and Prof Robinson U A C acted as timekeeper The question was opened by R C Hillman of the “A” In a neat concise twenty minute speech he outlined the position assumed by the affirmative and plunged into straight argumentation throwing aside all attempts at oratory or play to the galleries His delivery was good he made his points stand out “drove them home and finished up by a masterful summary of his In speaking of Hillman speech aftenvards President Brimhall of the B Y U said that when Hillman beean to speak he felt like “taking him in his arms and throwing him into a big law school” The first speaker for the negative was J R Robinson Robinson is a solendid public speaker possessing a striking stage presence and a finished delivery showing weeks of hard work for preparation However his speech was lacking in argument the main essential in debating To improve upon the Eng- - |
