Show STUDENT LIFE Agriculture Within the last few months in- quiries have been made of the college authorities as to whether or not they could recommend several voung men who are graduates of this institution for responsible positions in the agricultural departments of other schools and colleges Letters have also been received from different mercantile concerns asking the college to give them the names of young men who could enter emplovment along the lines of agricultural research As the matter now stands the graduates of the School of Agriculture are all holding lucrative positions and there are no young men available who may be recommended to take charge of or aid in agricultural work This incident is but a repetition of many previous ones and a good moral may be drawn from it There are too few young men preparing themselves for a field of labor and research which is just beginning to be developed In years gone by the efforts of most educational men and scientists have been directed along the line of engineering and the arts and sciences while scientific agriculture has received but little attention The United States government was perhaps the first to realize the importance of this pursuit and has aided the farmers of this country in every manner possible: One of the best aids offered by the government was the establishment of Experiment mt 49 Stations and Agricultural Colleges in the several states of the union These two institutions go hand in hand and by this means the state schools of agriculture are kept in close touch with the Department of Agriculture at Washington The purpose of this article is not to relate what has been done for agriculture in the United States or what may possible be done in the future but to call attention to the fact that too manv young men of this state are not availing themselves of the splendid opportunity offered them for practically nothing of preparing themselves for positions which are not only profitable in a pecuniary way but which also demand respect and confidence The federal government is in daily need of experts in arid farming and Uncle Sam is a good person so work for as pay is sure and he is considerate of the welfare of his employes Besides government employment paves the way for a young man who has ambitions yi of the public life The future are sure to have in their numberl several scientific “farmlaw-make- rs ers” Colleges and high schools in dif- ferent sections of the country are looking for young men who can take charge of instruction in agricultural work Sugar factories canning and fruit concerns and dry farm companies are offering goodly sums to the young man who comes to them and looks after their interests in a careful and scientific way Countless other branches of |
