National Briefs A Quick Look More hungry kids get fed in U.S. public schools WASHINGTON (AP) - Students from low-income families are eating more free and reduced-price breakfasts at school, an anti-hunger group said Thursday. The federal breakfast program feeds only two in five who need it. Still, it reached a record 7-7 million low-income children in the 2005-2006 school year, according to a report from the Food Research and Action Center. New Mexico posted the biggest increase, with 58 children getting breakfast for every 100 getting free and reduced-price lunches, up from 53 a year earlier. Ohio mother indicted in relation to baby's death DAYTON, Ohio (AP) - A woman suspected of killing her month-old daughter by putting her in a microwave oven was indicted on a charge of aggravated murder Thursday, and the prosecutor said he would seek the death penalty. The indictment against China Arnold, 26, does not provide details on the death of Paris Talley. Investigators have said evidence that includes high-heat internal injuries and the absence of external burn marks on the baby were consistent with a microwave. The baby died on Aug. 30, 2005. Her mother was arrested last week. "The Montgomery County coroner came to the conclusion that the injuries sustained by this baby could have only been caused by being placed into a microwave oven and having that oven turned on and (cooking) the baby to death," said Montgomery Country Prosecutor Mathias Heck. E. coli linked to Taco Bell LOS ANGELES (AP) - An E. coli outbreak linked to Taco Bell restaurants left the fast-food chain with a major damage-control challenge Thursday: How can it reassure customers its food is safe even as the suspected cause of the outbreak remained unconfirmed? The outbreak has left more than four dozen people sick in at least three states. Taco Bell ordered the removal of green onions from its 5,800 restaurants nationwide Wednesday after testing by an independent lab suggested the bacteria may have come from scallions. Analysts said the Mexican-style restaurant chain is likely to see sales decline in the short term. Missing Call man's body is found Man died while looking for help for his stranded family CENTRAL POINT, Ore. (AP) - Lost in the snowy wilderness and seeking help for his stranded family, James Kim probably traveled more than 10 miles on foot before he died, believing he could find a nearby town, authorities said Thursday. An autopsy released Thursday snowed that he died alone of hypothermia. His body was found in a creek's shallow water, about a mile away from his family's car. "James Kim did nothing wrong. He was trying to save his family," said Lt. Gregg Hastings of the Oregon State Police said a Thursday news conference. "He thought that if he could get to the river, he could make it to the town." Kim thought the nearby town of Galice was only 4 miles distant, although it was really 15 miles away, Hastings said. After scouring the mountains of southern Oregon for days, a search helicopter hired by his family spotted Kim's body midday Wednesday. He was found fully clothed on his back in Big Windy Creek near the Rogue River, authorities said. Dr. James Olson, a deputy state medical examiner, conducted the autopsy Thursday morning and was unable to determine the exact time of death, Hastings said. Kim's wife, Kati, and two daughters were rescued Monday when they were spotted by a search helicopter as they were leaving the car to find help themselves. With only baby food and a few snacks in the car, Kati Kim had nursed her two daughters to keep them alive during the ordeal. Kim, 35, was a senior editor for the technology media company CNET Networks Inc. He and his family had been missing since Nov. 25. They were AP Photo/The Oregonian, SolNeelman OREGON STATE POLICE LT. GREGG HASTINGS, right, and Jackson County Sheriff Mike Winters bow their heads during a news conference where officials announced that the body of James Kim had been found, Wednesday, Dec. 6,2006, in Merlin, Ore. The San Francisco father who got stranded in the snowy wilderness with his family nearly two weeks ago was found dead Wednesday in the mountains, authorities said. heading home to San Francisco after a family vacation in the Pacific Northwest, and apparently got stuck in the snow after making a wrong turn. Hastings said Kati told officers it snowed hard several days while the family was stuck, and the family heard helicopters at least twice. "Kati and the kids are in good condition as it relates to the ordeal that they've been through," he said. Sectarian violence continues, 23 killed BAGHDAD, Iraq (AP) - A series of bombings and shootings killed at least 23 people in Iraq on Thursday, including a 7-year-old girl and two college professors. Iraqi police also found 35 bullet-riddled bodies that had been bound and blindfolded and left in different parts of the capital. Brig. Gen. Abdul-Karim Khalaf, director of the Interior Ministry's national command center, vowed to strike back at the spiraling sectarian violence in Baghdad, saying Iraqi forces will soon launch house-to-house searches to confiscate hidden weapons. "No house or area will be excluded from this search. All kinds of weapons will be confiscated," he told reporters, adding that 40 policemen were killed and 90 wounded in the capital in the last week. The U.S. military confirmed that another soldier died in fighting Wednesday, raising to 11 the number of American troops killed on the same day the Iraq Study Group issued a report in Washington increasing pressure on President Bush to change his war strategy. Another U.S. soldier who was wounded on Wednesday died Thursday. The 11th soldier killed Wednesday was shot while manning a machine gun nest on the roof of an outpost in Ramadi, capital of volatile Anbar province, according to an Associated Press reporter on the scene. Ten other U.S. troops were killed in four separate incidents in Iraq, a major blow on the day the high-level bipartisan panel recommended gradually shifting U.S. forces from combat to training roles. The military said five died in fighting in Anbar, including three soldiers assigned to 1st Brigade, 1st Armored Division, one Marine assigned to 1st Marine Expeditionary Force Headquarters Group and one Marine assigned to 15th Marine Expeditionary Force. One Marine assigned to Task Force Military Police, 1st Marine Expeditionary Force also died Wednesday from nonhostile causes while operating in Anbar province. The other five troops killed Wednesday were Task Force Lightning soldiers who were struck by a roadside bomb during combat operations near the northern city of Kirkuk. The soldiers were assigned to 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 25th Infantry Division. The military also said a soldier assigned to 1st Brigade, 1st Armored Division who was wounded in the fighting in Anbar on Wednesday died Thursday. The deaths followed a particularly bloody weekend and raised to at least 32 the number of U.S. troops killed in the first week of this month. At least 69 troops were killed in November and 105 soldiers were killed in October - the highest monthly toll since January 2005. At least 2,920 service members have been killed since the war started in 2003, according to an Associated Press count. People •in'TEeWews, NEW YORK (AP) - After igniting a media firestorm by flashing her apparent lack of underwear to the paparazzi, Britney Spears is finally talking. "It's been so long since I've been out on the town with friends," the singer writes in a posting Thursday on her Web site. "It's also been 2 years since I've even celebrated my birthday. Every move I make at this point has been magnified more than I expected, and I probably did take my new found freedom a little too far. Anyway, thank God for Victoria's Secrets' new underwear line! I look forward to a new year, new music and a new me." Spears, the mother of two young sons, celebrated her 25th birthday on Dec. 2. She has been unleashing her inner wild child since filing for divorce last month from Kevin Federline, her husband of two years. Her recent nights out with party girls Paris Hilton and Lindsay Lohan - and those uncensored, R-rated crotch shots that were splashed across the Web - drew disapproval from her fans and other Spears watchers. NEW YORK (AP) - Now you can look good and smell good, too. Gwen Stefani is launching a perfume for her L.A.M.B. fashion and accessories line. Stefani says her deal with Coty Inc., announced Wednesday, is a sign that her success with L.A.M.B. (an acronym for Love Angel Music Baby) isn't fleeting. "It's very prestigious as a designer to have a fragrance. It's a milestone with L.A.M.B., and I don't want L.A.M.B. to go away. The fragrance makes it feel real, like it'll be here for a little while," Stefani told The Associated Press in an interview. "The whole L.A.M.B. thing is pretty greedy. I'm making it all for me," she said. LateNight David Letterman, Dec. 21, 2OO4 Top Ten Signs You're Not the Most Popular Guy in Your High School. Presented by Napoleon Dynamite 10.
