Romnry Stadium cvnw September USU Sport Information Din tor Craig Hi slop spoke with Ag Coach Bruce Snvdrr last week about hi squad the obesous perennial ques turn Mu year productive for you spring foothill The first fun lien u Mai Yr thr things wf wanted to accomplish we did (X course you never get through all of them we never have And there were some disappointment But that i basically what spring practice is for: to find out vour weaknesses as well as your strengths All in all it was really a gocai spring we found out a lot of things It seemed ro W freer snr athletes this spring than Did that ofirst the ea kmt during other spring iniwsi l the drills amt TTiat made it one of the smoothest springs we have had in that when you introduce a drill they've all been through n before That is one reason it was such a pleasant spring We didn't have to teach some of that material to new players We only had three new ones and (hose three have good habits in term of practice and they were easy to bring along in terms of our tempo It was really good that way At have done in the past So we worked on some of Utah's stuff BYU's stuff and San Jose State’s So I think we came further in that regard Now we're not at all polished or perfect them but I think we have it introduced and will be in a pretty good position come game week to institute or initiate that polish that material we have worked on So I like our schemes )om mentioned the ofimnre line and haw excited you mere before spring drills And then the injuries Sew mrha art you taunts ng on for these positions Brian Chnttrnsen (tackle) has to have a great year and he will I just believe that He's steadily made improvement He is bigger stronger faster quicker than he has been with move confidence He's played a year as a starter he has gone through a spring He will really be a Tine football player 1 don’t think there is anyway he cannot be barring injury Steve Jacson (center) will be a stalwart in the offensive line He is a veteran player mn plays with a lot of enthusiasm and I re him as being a real plus for our line Otherwise I see us as having good players who have had some problem or faced some hurdle any reaction to how eliminating the led the molts of spring football ipring game fin Well my first response would be that I know we which is positive One regret might be that Chico ex(Canales QB) didn't get some game-lik- e perience this spring We had a number of scrimmage which he did quarterback and we tned to make them as game-lik- e as possible It's still not the same as a game where there is more of a crowd officials and to forth Other than that I have no regTets whatsoever in eliminating it two-a-da- " That r as Jar as personnel goes how about uhemes We put everything in We not only got in aB of our schemes but we practiced them against two or three of our opponents whatever look we could get from our own personnel which is more than we feature runners M'uk the loss of Mitt A Kaiser mod Todd Brtfmi dots that change your awxsutg game au Oh it does We know obviously we would Im been stronger with them Somebody else hajm go to take up the slack Marcus Black hw u be a better football player and so docs Tonypi Roach I believe we will be a strong running fa ball learn How tomfartabie are yon right now withyowgmW hacking in contrast to how yom fill s year agr mth basically a new guy taming in I feel very good about all the people plaritg dx quarterback spot I really do I think its a very healthy position right now The problem witk is that there isn't an established star Bob Gaghan came in here with a tremendous amount of experience a lot of confidence Bright fellow n forth So I think that gave us a certain sense of security even though he had never played for u a this level But Chico for example has reaBy matured a great deal from his sophomore year (1m season) through spring He ha a lot more now I think he is going to be an esiefcst quarterback as will (Paul) Petros and (Doug) Samuels I think the immediate future looks pretty good It’s just a matter of one of them estabUng himself as a star you know and really as the leader of the club And I think that the derision e have made with Chico is the right one I think ke will prove to be a very good football player You talked about the running game You must jtd SO) fomfertaMi about year running backs considering jm noted § guy tenth the talent of Martin Jackson to dtjmu b that an indualion of how tomfortabU you art didn't get anybody hurt in a spring game this year Well the depth chart is still no solidified totally that is sumetmg that is a concern in a couple of spots fix us I think we still have a couple of good battle Now I don’t see that as a problem I like it when players are battling for a spot For example he flankrr spot with' Freddie Femandr and David Thompson iwo really fine players It's jusi not settled yet as to who will line up the first time against our first opponent So there is some of that left I think the depth will always be a problem to us and it always has been Generally we know who the front liners are or very close to that It will be how strong our depth is For example we thought we were going to be exremely strong depthwise in the offensive line After two weeks of practice we were really hurting there We were practicing some players that we're not anticipating playing next fall that really do need a redshirt year or a year of maturation But 1 think the depth is critical for us I think there are some freshmen that have umiA nee K°'r 8 to allow them to work their way into playing time Some of them are going to have to play and they are going to be in the depth right away just because of the lack of quality depth in some spots 1 USU Coach Bruce Snyder of the coming grid campaign yon look beak Traditionally spring drills serve to give yam loathes a better idem of how strong the tlnh u From that what are y drills uhal year priorities as yam get toady fat an the thing! yam found out during tpnng that yom are going to aim at MONDAY JUNE 22 Yes I like our running backs Maurice Turner will be a lot better than he was last year beaut last year he played the whole year with a spraetd ankle And he was nervous about being nxxtiatkt KJbsck limelight whereas before he played some to added all up that I think and behind Parro is much note He him for situation nervous very confident now iate Jones came on in the let last year and really was just learning the the end of the year He's going to be much two Ellis is a good runner And wehs excellent runner coming in terms of speed no httw-Marvi- For example Joe Crum at the strong guard should be really an excellent guard but he ended up the last two weeks sitting out because of mononucleosis That hurt his progress At weak guard is Skip Cl am pet t who has great experience but has had a problem with injuries and in fact this spnng was injured some At the weak tackle spot 1 really like both of the competitors there right now in Marcus Black and Tony Roach But Marcus has never played in a Division 1 game and Tony is just a sophomore So they are all facing some problems but 1 think with really a strong camp and without any problems — injury problems I am talking - about — I think they have a chance to be molded into really a fine offensive line Staying with the offense wide open football passing football has bstome a fradrmsrt here But the lass of Bob Caglsano and James Murphy (basitally the heart ofyour passing game from last year) are gone How strong a pasting loam will this ho in 198! We will have the same type of pass offense we had It just will not be called as much I don’t anticipate using it as readily as we have done in the past I think we will be a stronger running football team Our emphasis this spring was toward (has We made progress there we anticipate our line being one of the strengths of our overall team So see are going to take advantage of that We have a tremendous blocking fullback in Andre Bynum which will help our running game We have veteran tailbacks coming back I see us as just being a stronger running football team a more effective one talked about the running game You nastfd sej " JO comfortable about your running backs considering mi m guy wuh tht taUnt oj Mmrvtn Jocksou H mft oh? You thmt m n tmdumiwn oj how (omfortoblt you Tur Yes I like our running back Mauricetseeswe will be a lot better than he was last year last year he played the whole yer with nwe ankle And he was nervous about being fuO® some he before played limelight whereas an addedup that I think and behind Parro He is very nervous situation for him on into® came confident now Nate Jones last year and really was just learning the the end of the year He’s going to be mum Marvin Ellis is a good runner And we J excellent runners coming in terms of and high school credentials: Eric Adams Jackson So it’s a matter of what’s better team Now Marvin may be a better 1““® be is a corner He may be I don’t knowmoved for the strength of the team whim ana plus for him in terms of unselfishness to help the club I think this gives us w TU strength both on offense and defense other each use stacking good talent behind can avoid it - ” Wtxt treek: A daser look at the dtfes dosma the starters Plus U kfckif F |
