Show ai Banquet honors athletes by Shanz M Leonelli editor sports Just days alter kart Malone garnered the NBA's Most Valuable Player award several or the College of East- ern Utah's athletes received some hardware of their own at the annual sports banquet last night The athletes were honored for individual efforts in their respective sports while K'Zell Wesson was given the Male Athlete of the Year and Jamy Lee Angel took home the Female Athlete of the Year for their performances on the Golden Eagles basketball court It was an evening to recognize great performers for their contributions to their individual teams but none meant more to a team than the Volleyball's Most Inspirational player Kym Brown Brown who was killed in a car accident carl ier this year was lu mored when her parents received the Most Inspirational award Now she will have her name marked for all limes at CEU as the award will be named after the athlete for now on Other volleyball players earning awards were: Offensive Player of the Year Diana Tobiasson Defensive Player of the Year Lorie Williams and team MVP Melanie Strong Members on the baseball team were also given recognition for a successful season they include: the Golden Spike Award to Gary Bennett for his d effort on the diamond Amos Bright grabbed the Big Stick Award for his offensive output Most Valuable Pitcher and Most Valuable Player went to Rob Vacl the highly sought hard-nose- after right handed prospect As for the conference champion Men's basketball 'earn I larold Arccneaux was the Most Outstanding Player Arcencaux electrified the crowd w ilh his play and thundering dunks Alu Williams was the Most Improved Player Freshman of the Year went to Eduic Gill for his blanketing defense Noel Jackson earned the Best DefenWesson sive Player and was the Most Valuable Player For the women's hoop team Most Improved Player went to Jackie Rowbury Most Valuable Player was Catherine I laic and two sport star Diana Tobiasson earned her second award for Most Inspirational Player These individuals excelled in their athletic endeavors and gave CEU a successful year Three colleges in two years makes for a unique life for Eagle writer by Kelly Perottl staff writer When the sun starts shining brighter and spring is in the air the desire to be outside is neater and a countdown until schoolis over begins As we finish our last assignments and take final exams we think to our future and wonder where we will be It is unusual however to look back but it is the events that have occurred that led us to our present situations As I finish my sophomore year I cannot help but look back— thinking I am at my third college in two years I am glad to have had this unusual experience My first college was a branch of the University of Connecticut that was located near my home so I commuted I liked it — had some great teachers and learned a lot but something was missing It reminded me too much of high school and college was supposed to be different There were a lew people there that I had gone to high school with and the others although from different high schools were very similar to people I had known I wanted to meet people who were different sol decided to transfer to another college A friend of mine who was a senior in continued frtm front page been through several layoffs and wanted to have a backup plan I would love to get a job in information systems field if I leave UP&L" he said “I started taking classes in the fall of 1995 and with a lot of help from my coworkers who traded shifts with me to allow me to attend my classes I've finally made it My family has helped me a lot to reach this goal" he said Ilis five children range in age from 1 through 17 "I worked l2hour shifts and came to school evety day" Ills favorite classes were computer classes however he enjoyed taking psychology and sociology "1 didn't think I would like those classes but appreciated class both much more than I expected" I lis only A- - came in his He attributes his success of enrolling into college through business instructor I Henning Olsen "I le lined me up in classes and gave a lot of support think a lot of nontradilional students fear not being able to handle the work load of attending classes working and raising a family If we can get these people to get over this fear more would go ahead and do it" he said 1 micro-economi- cs Sui off lga0 I $1 oC$p otlgpg J 50je Tliuts -' Exp 501328 Eastnrj6jpe?wifStop&Shop Helgcrj high school told me about one of the colleges she was applying to Merrimack College a small private college in North Andover Mass was about three hours away from where I lived It had about 2000 students and when I visited the campus I loved it The tall brick buildings and the manmade pond with the bridge over it combined to show the beauty of the small campus The day I visited was during Spring Weekend and the campus was alive with activity I felt great about being there and knew that was where I wanted to go Fall came and I was excited to be starting at a new college I met many people during orientation but the best part of Mem mack was a weekend retreat I went on in November It is impossible to describe the events what they meant to me and what I learned but I left with a feeling of closeness to the people that were also there The weekend left a lasting imprint in my mind and lasting friendships in my heart As the semester drew to a close however I was faced with the fact that certain loans were not going to happen and I could no longer afford to stay at I was Merrimack unhappy but did have other options I could live at home and work or go to a community college near my home Or I could uo something totally different and move to (Vice Ulan an J live with family while attending CEU I had never been so far away from home and I felt drawn to come out West I arrived in Price in the middle of the snowstorm that dumped two feet of snow— it looked like I was still in Connecticut!
