Show assmwm rismimg Eydecris spend Spring byJiidwards staff writer Many students decided to visit their families for this spring break Others went river rafting hiking or hiking Some simply chose to rest their tired bodies from the lab rs of school But a small group o! 2 students and two Vista Volunteers from the College of East-r- n Utah decided to do somc-tmn- g unique with their time They i nose to do service During three 1 zens or people who arc both aware of the needs of our community and that actually go out and do something to meet those needs We laughed and joked and it was apparent from the good spirits that we were ready to have fun We watched a video called “The Power of One” Everyone loved the two minute clip so much that we watched it three times We were all given a folder with our name on it that we were asked to keep during our trip In it was assignment We drove to a building where we knew ahead of time that we were supposed to tear up the carpet The building is being made into an arts and recreation center When we walked inside and looked at the floor we knew we were in the right place The carpet was wearing thin and taped in many places When we started tearing the carpet up it ripped wherever we pulled it The next project was to begin Jake Leonard "Hey look these plants have this "X File" gel on them This freaked everyone out xj p' V -- t ‘wa 1 7 ij v 't if&i Laura Lancaster John Alden Whitehead Julia Lloyd and Rik Vasquez were all unsuspectedly struck by the macarena transe day excursion to Moab they pulled up carpet scraped floors and planted trees Day 1 The festivities began by meeting early Wednesday morning at the SUN Center Heidi Mathie served as the project director for Spring Break Away and did much of the planning and organizing of the trip Jill Piacitclli a Vista Volunteer for the SUN Center and Amber Simkins president of the SUN Center were also heavily involved in making sure things went as planned Wc started off with a presentation given by Piacitclli She helped us become acquainted with the people wc would be spending the next three days with by having us play a game called “Mingle Bingo" Piacitclli then explained the many different levels of service and motivated us to become active citi- - information on volunteering an agenda for the trip and pages for a journal For our first entry in our journal wc were asked to write what expectations wc had and if wc had any fears or concerns for our trip The people who went on Spring Break Away were Tyra Patrick Adam Shaffer Richard Thatcher Tricia Williams JuliaLloyd John Alden Whitehead Jake Leonard Laura Lancaster Gina Bourgeois Jill Edwards and our fearless lead- ers Rik Vasquez Piacitclli Mathie and Simkins Once the orientation was complete wc packed our bags and ourselves into three vehicles and started the drive to Moab We were a little late leaving and when wc arrived at our campground in town there was just enough time to cat lunch and begin setting up camp before we left for our first scraping the old glue and foam rubber off the floors of two large rooms Dave Olsen director of Moah Community Affairs arrived and gave us shovels and hoc-lik- e scraping tools Wc scraped from I to 4 pm Wc discovered later that wc had saved the city of Moab around $1000 with the work wc had done As wc worked wc choked and coughed on the black dust that came from scraping away the rubber pad Wc decided to have fun with our work and designed pictures in the floor One design spelled out SUN in big letters Wc sat in the middle of our art work ard posed for a picture The foam we scraped off the floor was swept into huge piles and then loaded into garbage bags The people who loaded the garbage crumpled up their noses trying to keep the foam dust out The bags were then put out on the curb with the carpet During our work a family drove up and asked if they could have the carpet Wc were surprised at the request but gladly gave it to them and some volunteers helped them load the carpet into their truck Wc were all surprised anyone would want the old carpet and wc decided to let people know the rest of the carpet was also up for grabs Olsen made a large card board sign that said “Free Carpet” When wc returned on Friday morning to move furniture wc discovered that all the large bags of foam rubber had been picked up by someone Some people worked outside the recreation center and pulled weeds Wc took turns scraping sweeping moving furniture and doing other odd jobs “Wc all proved wc had the power to ac- - |
