Well you should he this may he your only chance to see the Olympics Living in Price you will he a short two hours away from the festivities According to Sail Lake City Magazine 82 percent of Utahns arc for the Olympics coming here in a few years They believe it will benefit Utah in many ways Economically they think it will he one of the best years for Utah Restaurants business along with hotels and stores will he booming Ski resorts will he packed and Salt Lake City will be filled Gov Michael Leavitt believes that taxes could he relatively low that year for the average for business will he at an all lime high Even (hough Utah may money-makin- g citizen and end up putting out a billion or more dollars for preparing for the Olympics it will generate nearly twice or more back of that in revenue for the state The Olympics will increase jobs in Utah due to the fact it will lake many to help build the new facilities Restaurant and hotel staffs will increase and committees to keep the Olympics running smoothly will also require a lot of people Overall about 5(XX) jobs can employ people right away Not to mention the airports will he packed meaning jobs in the airline industry as well Having the Olympics coming to our state would put Utah on the map The recognition Utah would get from the Olympics would be positive and we could benefit from this greatly in the long run Politicians believe like Mayor Deedcc Corridini that once the Olympics come to Salt Lake people will know what a great slate this is and continue to visit here in the future which can increase money for Utah in the long run Residents of Salt Lake arc indeed for the Olympics coming to Utah I believe that it will he a good for the economy in Salt Lake and good for our image Look for the announcement of the Olympics in June It will he broadcast world-wid- e “Salt Lake has a great chance of getting the Olympics in 2(X)2 for many reasons they may he the most likely to win the hid" reprinted Spans Illustrated Magazine Classroom crunch is not as serious as administration thinks Christensn staff writer By Leona and 9 am am and noon classrooms arc filled with before arc hours had been which afternoon the classrooms same packed only plus classrooms now cither scarcely populated or empty The number of occupied diminishes even more as the afternoon continues During fall quarter the College of Eastern Utah received permission from (he State Building Board to lease the vacated Durrani Elementary school located north of the college The administration stated that the reason for leasing the facility is to help solve the dilemma of a “space crunch" Faculty member Dr James Schampcl scoffed at the idea of the so called “classroom crunch" lie observed the number of empty classrooms in the morning and afternoon in the Computer Business Building lie suggested that the “classroom crunch" could be alleviated by adding more classes that arc taught in the afternoon An obvious drawback to this solution was identified by Schampcl lie assumes that most likely many of the instructors and students don't want to teach or attend classes after 2 pm I le added that sometimes you have do things you don't want to do like leach or attend a class at 3 pm when you would rather be home by 2 students At 8 Between 10 pm enrollment has increased by 7 percent These additional students have put pressure on CEU to hire more faculty and provide more classes to educate the throng Thus die need for more space not only for classrooms but faculty offices Office space for faculty and administration is at a premium Some instructors have offices without windows or have a In the past three years CEU's full-tim- 1 e small amount of space At the present lime it is foolish and unnecessary to purchase the Durrant School merely for added classroom space when adding classes later in (lie afternoons would increase the capacity of space CEU already has However CEU campus is situated in the center of a residential area and is therefore landlocked There is no where the campus could expand without invading someone's home park or the cemetery The only place left to expand investment it was a very solid investment the "classroom crunch" in reality is the is to Durrant Elementary School So as a long-ter- acquisition As a short-tertime frame from 10-no- m m The Olympics are a good thing as long as they are not in Utah by Rachel Josephs staff writer None of us can ignore the sign in Salt Lake that says” 1 66 days left until the Olympic bid" I'm sure we' vcall wondered what all this Olympic hoopla is about especially after the city offers us a free John Denver concert to try and convince us that the Olympics are a good thing I don't know about you but sometimes I feel like I'm being bought out which makes me not quite certain that the Olympics arc a good thing On face value the Olympics are said to benefit Utah's economy In actuality the only people who will benefit from the Olympics arc the business owners of Salt Lake (yes it comes down to another bourgeoisie versus proletariat discussion) We all know that in order to build a ski jump a couple of Olympic-siz- c ice rinks dean up the city and upgrade our ski resorts is going to cost a lot of money Where is this money going to come from? That's right your pocket! Private Eye Weekly a Salt Lake City newspaper said "The Olympics is going to cost the residents of Utah a lot of money Although it will allegedly bring back a huge return the costs clearly outweigh" It's obvious that hotels restaurants ski resorts and airlines will increase in revenue and probably will become very rich from the Olympics But for those of us who have nothing to do with any of these industries especially those outside of the Salt Lake area probably won't sec any monetary return Karl Marx a political philosopher explains our leaders continue to support something that will hurt the average citizen and benefit the big business leaders “The leaders (in our type of society) look out for die future of business and not Tor the common (person) because of their continuing involvement with business and the personal gain involved thereof" In other words although our fearless leaders may he in support of it it doesn't mean that it would be a good thing economically forthecommon person especially those outside of the Salt Lake area who will definitely not receive any of the economic benefits (think “inflation" with me for a moment) Not only will the Olympics hurt us economically but it will also hurt our primitive natural surroundings Channel 4 news aired a poll taken on what Utahns value most about this state That's right 57 percent said it was the environment Although we'd all like to believe that the Olympics won't hurt our canyons it's simply not true Roads that run up canyons will he widened ski jumps and lougcs will have to be made restaurants and hotels will he built in the mountainsand these arc just off of the lop of my head More than likely our pristine natural surroundings will be destroyed by Olympic preparations We'd like to believe that the Olympic planning committee has made promises to environmental groups hut these premises entail protecting areas that weren't even going to be used in the games Our beloved Wasatch Front will be completely in dustrialized by this Not only arc there potential harms to the economy and the environment but we all suffer the possibility of insanity The last time that I hit the slopes it was crowded and the lift tickets were expensive When I worked at Snowbird I went to an orientation where they said "The crowd is who we cater to They bring in the most revenue to our resort" It's more than dear that the resorts will not only become more crowded from extra people but the prices will rise because of the continued demand for lift tickets Where docs out-of-sta- te (hat leave us locals'That's right in the dust Unless you have a desire to try out the ski jump I think that the upgrading of the resorts that you pay for won't he that beneficial We know that it's difficult to gel a hotel room in Salt Lake right now Picture with me if you will with the increased tourism thc difficulties Imagine the freeways with a special “Olympics only” lane while you os a local gel out of the way for limos that arc driving to Park City for cocktail parties If you think that you can afford to he driving in that lane think again (unless you cun afford $700 for a ticket to sec the Olympics) This Olympic frenzy is nothing hut big business owners and country Imping to benefit from Utah money and loss of sanity This hoopla leaves us locals in the dust In the 19 election I would suggest a strong "no" for the Olympic initiative out-of-sta- te lax-pay- er |
