disgust when considering the American public went full heartily along lead either this “In business stated Iacocoa Lee Ceo with the hearings The “Red Scare” turned neighbor against neighbor you Chrysler follow or get out of the way” Iacocoa's business was the auto indusand is evidence of how the American people follow without looking has the been a has taken that the leadership ahead In the end though the American public had enough They beating lately industry try is on rose from the shadows of disgust and put an end to the abuse of power industry In American society today too much emphasis placed who the leader is rather than on what the leader is doing Everyday It is evident that the American public is both part of the problem and involves it American life rarely involves leading nor following getironically the only solution are individuals Too the of out organizations leaving The public and the people can only enforce so much control once way many ting them More leaders are the out clubs and movements because the assumed leadership has become dominant Joseph Stalin Benito forcing than anything this excursion is due to a lack of focus vision and unMussolini and Adolf Hiller are all examples of leaders neither deservthe the leaden of derstanding (Mi part ing nor fulfilling the position More importantly though they are all The most vivid example of leadership lacking vision came from examples of tyrants that abused power and were not easily forced out 1992 s election year The leader's name was Ross Perot a When the public becomes so apathetic as to who and what their leaders n millionare who was running for the presidency He was the are doing then it creates the perfect atmosphere for another abuse to leader of a strong grass roots movement The movement had a occur eleclocal well as election as tremendous impact on the presidential Such an atmosphere is beginning to arise once again The tyrant tions The problem with the movement was not the message the this time is not our elected officials it is the less visible leaders the ones whose control will more negatively effect our future It is ourproblem was with the messenger When Perot Tint announced his intentions of leading the campaign the media and the public swarmed selves those of us who choose to remain behind the curtains or those around this American story His ratings and public approvals were inof us who choose to blame the other person The leader is not me office had held never individual who for an who assumes leadership the leader is one who despises it Each of us political high credibly The honeymoon ended there Perot did not handle his leadership posifollow that leader into an apathetic world behind the curtain and beimtion adequately The campaign began to lose vision and more yond positive impact moveGrass lose to voter the support campaign began portantly Tracy Chapman's “Freedom Now” explains “Everyday is bom a from lead was This movement fool one who thinks that he can rule one who says tomorrows mine ments start from the bottom up being the top down There was only one leader and that person was Perot one who wakes one day to find that the prison doors open and the He had forgotten that it was the people who pul him in the position shackles broken and chaos in the streets” It is evident that the Amerhe was in Supporters were leaving the campaign by the thousands ican public has begun to accept more responsibility for the state of our This all happened because Perot forgot that the messenger and the country it is also painfully evident that they have not accepted leader are only as important as the leaded and the message enough Perot was not the exception he was the rule Far too often leaders Individual leaders do not deserve respect merely because of a title an and instant have assume that when they have a title they credibility Respect should be earned not granted Responsibility should be given instant reason to assure themselves of respect This is not the case not taken and leadership should be awarded not assumed More imfrom unfortunate The the public the assurance of respect only comes portant than anything is the little recognized fact that leaders are not note is that it is often the public who hands this title and respect to independent from the people they lead they are only as good as the much the be of leader however followers the leader The catalyst may indeed the blame belongs to the public Too often the public accepts things Vision is inherent in any quality leadership That vision has to that the face to value never giving enough thought come from the people put to use through the leaders The leaders at implications could come from an abuse of power During the 1960s the American must be those who follow The statement goes "If the people lead Sen for such abuse an the leaders will follow" Only when we realize that that is true will allowed Joseph McCarthy began reminisced Chances about made nothing story the dullest Stranger in a stranger land Melanie Bacon staff writer A stranger in a stranger land like a child who has believed in an innocent world of Sesame Street then suddenly discovers the only channel on television to be broadcasting a 24 hour marathon of Hcadbangcr's Ball All at once the young mind is exposed to a different side of the world a curtain that has finally opened to reveal a tremendous and turbulent view on what was before only a comforting and stable reality My knowledge of religion is like the mind of that innocent child I wouldn't necessarily say that I'm naive to religion as I harbor some of my own beliefs about God (as perhaps the child harbors some personal beliefs about Big Bird) Now in a town eight hours away from my own home and from the feeling of familiarity that was always taken for granted I've found myself in front of that open curtain staring into a new belief in which I had never before been aware The Mormon religion obviously has a large impact on the College of Eastern Utah as most of the people I've met have a strong belief in its teachings Never before have I seen and experienced a group of people in one place more committed to one faith It goes beyond the school it's in the clubs and manner of lifestyle that is apparent to a bystander a stranger who watches and observes from a distance As I begin to meet more and more students here I feel a stab of shame every time the topic of religion surfaces This shame is not due to the fact that I am not Mormon but instead to my ignorance of a faith that is obviously such a large part of so many people's lives For the First time in my life I'm feeling like the language all around me is foreign that the background and belief of such a majority is one that I am totally unaware of Like that innocent child my mind is eager to learn and experience something new a new faith that is practically in my town and in life my Already I've felt the uncomfort of being the minority of not "belonging" to something so large and overwhelming Conversations about religion leave me separated though I don't find any fault in my silence Those who travel through the course of life in a stale of grey who never experience the rainbow non-existe- nt (e Stranger page 8) |
