Show I a jiursd H1aa2Ul Preserving tine individual Brad Gwyther columnist At this time I would like to apologize not because I am wrong but because it is necessary My apologies go to my advisor teacher and very good friend Susan POlster It really upsets me that "someone” yelled at her for something I had done Why the attack on her? Couldn't that "srrvne" come after the one who is responsible for the article? It jus "isn't make nse It's too bad thaf"someone" could go after the women in the rooni and not the man behind the article This is not meant to sound sexist but it would seem "someone" gets off on trying to intimidate people and unfortunately must go after anyone except who is responsible I wanted to write a farewell article stating how good CEU has been to and for me including messages of how I have developed respect for others and their views Unfortunately I do not like how people treat each other on this campus I feel all people have a right to be who they are what they want to be and say what they want to say I feel this way because this is an institute of higher learning and we are all adults using our minds to further develop our individual values Maybe if certain faculty and staff could be more like students and accept others views on things they would get along better Do not say that you do because I know how you talk about one another I have no regrets going to CEU in fact I would repeat all three years if given a chance to start over Fond memories like yell leading plays newspaper dances activities ballet student government and a whole lot of experiences and people are permanently etched in my mind However unless I have been in a coma and missed out on the overthrow this is still America A place where views and beliefs can be as individual as the person themselves We each walk to the beat of a different drum and no one should try and change that beat just because they don't like it Just because I didn't agree with what "someone” said I didn't go after "someone's" family and friends screaming my head off I would have addressed my opinion to the face of that person like oh let's say an "adulL" Nothing irritates me more than to see people who we are supposed to look up to and leant from act like a horse's behind What kind of image does that imprint on those who leant from these people? Docs that mean if our views differ then we verbally attack and tear down the mental structure of another individual? Maybe as a campus we need to go to classes that !ach and emphasize "to each hisher own" Whatever the race creed jtual preference right If professional status is on an individual that is their God-givyou would like to take a religious standpoint Jesus Christ preached at the Sermon on the Mount "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you" Golly does that mean that we are all poor Christians? Oh no what about the atheists? Docs that give them the right to treat people like a buffalo baglc? I think not! It all boils down to respect to your fellow manwoman Let me further add that my family and friends have no influence on what I write And my upbringing was just fine My opinions have been developed from my logic and my heart and I thank God for the loving family I have To my family who was dragged into this mess I am sorry and I love you To my friends I love you all and keep the faith And to possibly the best example of a friend I can find Susan thank you for all you have taught me and done for me I love you and will always respect the way you treat people and the way you have treated me You could have treated me as a student but you treated me as an equal and a friend and that is the best lesson I have learned at en CEU the past three yean To the Eagle staff of today and next year never be afraid to express yourself This is "your” paper and you are the future of what is important to us To the rest of you good luck and I hope you can learn the same things I did at this college Farewell good luck and remember to always be true to yourself Give unto Caesar what is Caesar's by Sam Pittman sometimes useful to wake people up It worked for me thanks an effing I have written several editorials during the school year and in retrospect I realize they have all been complaints about social issues Perhaps I am a chronic complaincr In an attempt to cure my affinity for complaint I have decided instead to render unto Caesar what is Caesar's and render credit where credit is due First allow me to thank my loyal readers all two of you Sometimes you may have wondered about the relevance or perhaps the credibility of what I have written But you read anyway Without your support I might have succumbed to strictly hard news articles Keep the faith In my time as a staff writer for The Eagle I have been lucky to work with a great group of writers and photographers Located on memory lane are a few special moments that deserve mention Fust to my favorite photographer thanks for the ringside seats at “photo-mani-a III" Rest assured there are going to be ample bike racks in heaven I am grateful to our esteemed sports editor who in his notes and quotes reduced all civil rights activists to mere whiners for making me aware of what would have happened had Thomas Jefferson been a sportswritcr Honorable mention goes to that brave young editorial writer who in true satirical spirit took on half the known world (the better half in my book) in his article on PMS Talk about wanting to become a martyr! And while we are on the subject of women thanks to the cheerleaders for making the journalism room an experience Kudos to a groat lady who I suspect to be a recovering workaholic to for all her support It must have taken a great amount of refrain from hacking and slashing my articles to pieces Congratulations on performing the miracle of making the paper fun and educational sociology an cn- Speaking of fun thanks to Doc Jim for making S L a I would like to thank all those people who arc indispensable cogs in the academic mechanism I am grateful for the services provided by the library the fresh coffee provided by the cafeteria the most excellent help provided by financial aid and to all the instructors and administrative personnel who have made my mind expanding experience possible Thanks to the housing department Saddam Hussein the makers of Prozac the federal government and religious fanatics everywhere for giving me the opportunity to exercise my first amendment right to bemoan all forms of social injustice Well enough of massaging everyone's ego my departure from the path of a cynic has lasted long enough Let us take a glimpse at what the future may hold I have a suggestion for next year The controversy over the smoking rooms last fall made me sensitive to the rights of people to conduct their vices in public I do not smoke but I would sure appreciate a place on campus to have a cold beer After all you can advertise beer on television it must be better than cigarettes Not to worry after a hard day at school I can't afford to get filled up lot staff editorialist eye-openi- ng self-contr-ol J J a — laiiu — dyed-in-the-wo- ol CEU may be blessed with its own radio station so that we may express ourselves on the airwaves as well as in prim Dangerous thought students on the air acting as a voice for radio-fre- e Utah A veritable voice in the wilderness spreading the education gospel allowing ttywc who do not like to read to become loyal listeners I look forward to next year in our new building with any luck our new surroundings will come complete with enough “Macs" for each journalism student Maybe we could trade in a few of those IBM terminals we certainly have a surplus But on a realistic note I would be happy with a new waxer Perhaps the procurement Gods will smile upon us Perhaps So long until next year LB Sambo prc-histo- ric Educators force personal values on students By Sam Pittman staff writer During fall quarter at the College of Eastern Utah I was privileged to assist an experiment that evaluated the academic capabilities of students from around the state The results were not surprising students from the Southeastern districts scored far below their peers What caused these districts to lag behind? Education funds in the state are equally distributed by law therefore spending is roughly the same for each student Smaller class size would provide for more individual attention per student which would in theory raise the average grade Based on this information lack of funds or attention cannot be the answer Another possibility that occurred to me was pay scale Quality teachers are going to go where the money is In all fairness to those quality educators who teach for the love of their students teaching is not a high paid profession The hours are long and the work can be very demanding Noble intentions aside there are still financial obligations to be met therefore salary may have something to do with the pom quality of education in Southeastern Utah Small schools cannot afford quality teachers Occupational burnout may be another cause There seems to be a tendency to teach only those students who are easy to teach The problem children are shoveled under the rug weeded out of the system if you will Teachers seem reluctant to deal with students who do not conform One of the qualities attributed to free thinkers like Benjamin Franklin and Albert Einstein was their difficulty in conforming to society's norms There is no program to deal with troubled students Problems with attendance and citizenship are dealt with by expulsion That is an intelligent solution A student has trouble in school so instead of making an effort to resolve the problem the student is expelled What good is a physician who will only see those who are well 1 He will look good on paper be- cause none of his patients arc sick but is he really helping anyone? I think our educators ought to tend to the students who need help Another problem deals with the sociological theory of labeling (continued on page 12) |
