Show I Vol VIII College of Editor Hills to Speak One of the country's foremost editors the executive newspaper the editor of Knight chain will present the dedicatory address Feb 5th at the dedication of three new buildings on the campus of Col'egc of Eastern Utah On the evening of the dedication Dr James C Fletcher U of U President will present to Mr Hills the honorary degree Doctor of Humane Letters from the University of Utah This will be the first time that the Univcr-'ri- y has enftred a degree off 'Mmrrts in h: United States ami the first time an honorary doctorate has been awarded on the CEU campus according to Dr John W Tucker CEU Director Lee Hills 62 has been a newsman more than 40 years He's been on both the directing and the writing end of Pulitzer Prizes The first Pulitzer prize came 1950 when he directed the camMiami Herald's paign which dug into the gangster world and was instrumental in the Kcfauvcr probe starting in anti-crim- e in that city The second came in 1955 when Hills then executive editor at the Detroit Free Press as well as holding the same title at The Herald wrote a scries of articles “Behind the Auto Curtain" g He gave readers information on what was going on behind supposedly secret closed-doo- r meetings on wage public-affectin- Eastern Utah Price Utah— Friday January SI 8 at Dedication talks between auto workers and manufacturers Bcrn in the little town of Granville N D Hills did his ffirst reporting as a high schooler in Price Utah and two years later was named editor of the paper the News-Advoca- attended He Brigham Young University ’and later the University of Missouri’s School of Journalism While working on the Oklahoma City Times he went to law school at night and was admitted to that state's bar e A man Hills has worked at virtually every editorial and top management position in the newspaper industry He is the only man who has gained the acclaim of having been the president of four of the profession’s most influential groups in the United States— the American Society of Newspaper Editors the Associated Press Managing Editors Association Sigma Delta Chi (professional journalism society) and the Inter American Press Association Hills' other honors haw included: The Maria Moors Cabot Prize by Columbia University in 1946 for “outstanding contribution to rc'f-mad- better inter-Americ- relations" He was one of the first North American newspapermen to receive the award The University of Missouri Honor Award for Distinguished Service in Journalism in 1951 and election to its Hall of Honor L From the Desk of the Dean Let me take this opportunity to thank all of the students who helped move the books and equipment into the new library You should all be very happy with the new student lounge and I remind you that it is available for your use Also at this time let me congratulate Mr Brent West and Tom Holdaway on becoming new newspaper advisor and editor Our special edition to the high school speech meet turned out very well and I take this as a good sign for the future Dean Sclman An Honorary degree from Cleary College Ypsilanti Mich and honors from the International League for Bolivarian Action for “contributions to inter-Americ- solidarity" Mr Lee Hills is married to the former Mrs Tina S Ramos who has received journalistic honors and headed the foundation which operates El Mundo San Juan Puerto Rico and its associated TV and radio stations Mr and Mrs Lee Hills combining their individual talents and expertise have become a powerful team in the contribution of understanding and cooperation between all countries LEE HILLS Number 1969 TINA S R HILLS Mrs Hills will accompany Mr Hills at the dedication BRENT WEST Director of CEU Relations Appointed The appointment of L Brent West as Director of College Relations at College of Eastern Utah was announced this week by Dr John W Tucker President of the College The action was approved at the regular meeting erf the Board of Regents of the University of Utah of which CEU is a Branch Mr West received his Bachelors Degree in Psychology at Brigham Young University in 1967 and is currently completing work toward a Masters Degree in Public Administration at the same University At BYU he was a member of Val Hyrics during its existence and is currently President of Psi Chi National Honor Society in Psychology Prior to his appointment to the College of Eastern Utah staff Mr West was assistant to Dr Stephen L Alley Chairman of Department of Teacher Education Brigham Young University His assignment at CEU according to Dr Tucker will include supervision of all public relations activities including news information and High School relations He will also assume a major responsibility with financial aid Dr 'Dicker added Mr West replaces Dean Walton who was appointed Dean of Instruction at CEU at the beginning of the fall quarter He lives with his wife Ilcne a son Gary and a new little girl Julie Ann at 862 North 4th East in Price |
