special assembly was held to honor those students who have demonstrated high scholarship during the current year Dr Aaron E Jones president of Carbon College and principal of the high school division scheduled the assembly to afford those who earn high grades In their classes an opportunity to receive public acclaim for their achievements and to encourage all students to improve their study habits Appearing as speakers were Wesley P Larsen chairman of the scholarship committee Dr William Cross supervisor of secondary schools in Carbon county JUNIORS SELECTED Roselyn Colombo and Korlecn Balle have shown exceptional ability as junior English students Institute Convention Attract Student Officers Juniors Selected For NCTE Achievement Award Officers of the past school year d officers for the and a Lambda attended coming year Delta Sigma Institute Convention at the College of Southern Utah in Cedar City last Friday and Saturday Upon arriving Friday afternoon the students attended several discussions and made for the coming school year plans That evening from 6:00 to 8:00 all offipjn a banquet honoring was held cers of the fraternities in the CSU cafeteria Carbon students were guests of the CSU Preference Ball that evening Early Saturday morning a band of students left Cedar City for Zion's National Park where they hiked to "Angel Point Cliff" A special testimonial meeting was held in a rock grove after which luncheon was served The trip back to Cedar City and to Price completed the trip Officers of Lambda Delta Sigma who attended the affair were Ron Shaw Ray Green Charlene Anderson LaRenc Petersen Viola Sanderson Craig Shiner Ron Watt Bruce Olsen Shanna Evans and Leah Jessen They were accompanied by Mr and Mrs A Dean Wcngrccn newly-electe- Two outstanding English students at Carbon High School have been named nominees for the achievement awards The students for this award arc nominated as juniors but the awards are made when they are seniors Each award will consist of a scroll plus a recommendation to colleges university and scholarship donors NCTE High School Students' Poems Accepted For Anthology submitted by the and English classes of journalism Mrs Jeanette McAlpine have been accepted by the National High School Poetry Association for the spring edition of the Annual Anthology of High School Poetry Joan Ilenrie’s poem "The Sea” was given special mention Other poems receiving certificates of Acceptance were "Love" by Linda Gambcr "Awakening Mom" by Irene Listcllo ''The Poem I Did-'write" by Kay Lynne Croft "Prelude to Winter" by Beverly Keller California the National High School Poetry Association sponsors two contests each year one in the fall and one in the spring These contests are open to all high school students Ten poems nt National Merit Scholarship Tests Given Tomorrow All high school juniors who have paid their fees of $100 per person are eligible to take the National Merit Scholarship test tomorrow This is a nationwide program and must b e given throughout the nation on that day This year over five million dollars in Merit Scholarships and other grants are expected to be awarded Many of these scholarships and grants may be used at Carbon College The program is the largest pri- vate scholarship activity In the history of the United States Educational program 1 A J The purpose" of the NCTE achievement awards is to grant public recognition to some of the best high school English students d in the United States award winand thirty-fiv- e ners will be selected plus four runners-u- p hundred and thirty-fiv- e Four-hundre- The names of the nominees along with supporting ' materials will be submitted to the state committee In October each nominee will take a test on literary awareness and understanding of The communication techniques score will committee the state test paper and evaluate all other supporting evidence for each nominee and will select finalists for the NCTE committee “Dolls of the Deep" Revealed In Fashion Show Fi Gamma Chi sorority of Carbon College presented their annual fashion show last Wednesday at the regular assembly hour "Dolls of the Deep” was the clever theme carried out in script and decorations Diane Bean Patti Brasher and Sondra Harmon portrayed the characters of Henrietta TUlic and the Red Lantern respectively in the “Land of the Lost" "Dolls" of the Fi Gam sorority modeled pajamas school clothes sportswear streetwear afternoon wear and formal wear admist a decorated stage of colored tumbleweeds a huge rock and a back drop upon which was painted an underwater castle Miss Arlene Crawford chairman of the affair was assisted by Charlene Anderson narrator of the fasrion parade James Young artist Fred Babcock director of lights Mrs Natalie Bean Sondra Ilarmon Fatti Brasher Phyllis Tatton and Marilyn Ilatsis A novelty song and dance ‘Three Little Flshies" was presented by Judy Rodash Sharra Petersen and Lynn Varner Pep Club members A special feature was a dance by the models in formal wear and their escorts Couples were George Ilatsis and Loretta Abeyta Ron Shaw and Leah Jessen Frank and Joan Pitts James Pappas and Marilyn Geary Bruce Olsen and Adding to the evening's festivities will be the master of ceremonies Al Veltri Various skits will be presented by the featured classes during the evening Grant Fausett Alumni president states that there will be class reunions before the banquet which will be held in the college cafeteria at 7:30 pm Admission will be 3175 per plate For those who are not yet members of the association membership in school who are there for the social advantages? The answer is no!" At this point a buzzer sounded Students glanced around thinking perhaps something was wrong with the bell system Dr Nelson cased their minds by explaining that the noise was made by his Swiss watch especially made to woke up students Carbon Band Flays Concert The combined band of Carbon College and Carbon high school under the direction of Mr Alvin Wardlc presented a band concert for the student body Thursday April 17 in the civic auditorium The numbers played on the assembly program were: "A Frangosa" "On The Mall” “Sarabamlc and Bourric” Pique Dance" Brocn-hol- t" Tromberero" "My Fair Focato" "The Nutmcggers Lady" and Concertino" Beverly Keller and Judy Brienholt playing background music A concert was presented for the public Thursday night also in the civic auditorium The band is very proud of their ''ONE" rating at the band meet at Provo on April 16 This rating was the highest one given in the band festival The numbers ployed at the meet were "A Frangesa" Sarabande" and Bourric" Six other bonds played at the meet Coveted Spots Given Honor Students General aptitude tests batteries were given recently to tenth and eleventh grade boys who are interested in a two-yetrade Caroffered at training program bon College Thcro are openings for 22 boys in this course and there have been over 60 applicants Eliminations arc being mode by means of mechanical and mental aptitude ar tests The final decision for the boys eligible to take the four hour daily course will depend upon their post records in school Truancies grades and attitudes will be factors considered in the judging - |
