Show Monday March 10 1951 THE CARBONICLE New Courses SOCIETY and CLUB NOTES Offered in Night Closses Several new evening classes have been scheduled at Carbon College for the spring quarter Among the new classes now being taught are Philosophy 10 an introduction to the history of philosophy which gives four hours cre- dit Humanities a discussion and examination of the basic ideas set forth in the cultures of ancient Green and Rome into the middle ages This will include a study of the great authors philosophers and leaders of that period with emphasis on the great literary works English 11 or the Novel will consist of reading and appreciation history and development of the modern novel This class gives 5 hours credit and is taught by Gerard Cautera Greek I Is an introductory course in Greek that offers five hours credit The grammar idiomatic expressions composition and enunciation of modern Greek will be discussed Biology 4$ will introduce a course entitled the New Science this With fOUr hours credit course is designed to bring the neW frontiers of science within tiie scope and understanding of the average citizen Subject matter will include the latest developments in astronomy experimental biology botany genetics cliand the matology rocketry launching of satellites The instructor for the course is Wesley Larsen Other classes in advanced accounting and coal mining are being planned Spring Quarter Marks Increased Enrollment An increased enrollment marked the beginning of the Spring Quarter at Carbon College which began March 3 Students registered in the college library on that day Teachers and students were preparing for another twelve weeks of laming The quarter is scheduled to end May 29 Seniors to Order Announcements Starting on Tuesday March 4 the the lives of all the first ladies of the United States was presented by Mrs Carl Olsen on Monday evening March 3 in the Pi Gam room During the course of the review Mrs Olsen displayed pictures of each of the first ladies These portraits were pencil sketches done by Mr Carl Olsen for the occasion Following the review the members were feted by three of the members Charlene Anderson Mar-v-a DeFriez and Marilyn Geary Refreshments carried out the theme of our "First Ladies” with sword and bell sandwiches cherry pic alamode Liberty punch and artistic hand painted favors of old fashioned lasses attached to the Graduation time is approaching The Senior Class has had the first of a scries of parties The party was bold in the college gym on Saturday February 22 and Dancing refreshments Council of Teachers of English Is sponsoring a program of National Awards Each school Is to nominate a number of outstanding juniors in English according to the enrollment of the school Students are nominated as juniors but the awards will be made when they are seniors Each award will consist of a scroll pin and a recommendation to colleges universities and scholarships donors that each winner be granted a college scholin arship Names of runners-u- p each state will also be submitted to colleges In addition a certificate of recognition will be given to each department of English from which an award winner is selected Eight students will be selected from the English department of this school by the English teachers Later there will be an elimination by impartial judges and two winners will be sent as contestants Carbon College To Train Machinists representing the Sporry-Ran- d Company have been in Price interviewing applicants for employment as machinists in the Salt Lake City plant of the company Approximately 25 people made applications for the training program and assured job plan sponsored by Sperry Rand in cooperation with Carbon College If twenty or more of these applicants receive approval of the company the college will provide the required six month training program to prepare men for employment as machinists according to President Jones Registration for the Course will be open to persons interested in the course other than those approved by Sperry Rand Dr Jones points out that opportunities arc very good for employment in the machinist occupation It is known that there is a need at present in Utah for 1000 trained machinists and will be an expected need for 4000 within the next three years to meet the need of the state Interviewers Music and Meet Way's
