Show Carbon College Price Utah Friday September Volume 15 1G Number 11)19 WEEKLY COLLEGE Block “C” Club PROGRAM ON AIR Activities Under Way “Carbon College Presents" the weekly radio program of the college has already appeared twice during the current season under the direction of Mr Aaron speech and radio teacher On Saturday September 3 Dr Aaron PI Jones college president discussed plans and prospects for the coming school season Elaine Waterman sang a solo and joined Carol Waterman and Paralce Johnston in a vocal trio with Enid Seaton as accompanist The program also presented Mr William Cross chairman of today’s special activities with publicity about the dedication Last Saturday brought to the (Continued to Page Three) Roy-lan- cc 1 After a slow start last year the Block “C" club has been working all summer to make the dedicatory program and game a success The club had its first meeting Tuesday and all the members showed the enthusiasm that will guarantee the club a successful year The elections for officers will be held September 28 Mr Cross has been selected as the club adviser for this year The club officers at present are Norman Aplanalp president Gail Prince and Shoro Budo secretary vice-presid- ent Autumn Drama Slated Tryouts for this year's play Carbon College Dedicates New Athletic Field scheduled for November 3rd and 4th will held next week and be - Tonight at eight o'clock dedication ceremonies for the new $44000 athletic field of the college will be conducted under the joint sponsorship of the "C" club and the student council Distinguished Guests Invitations have been extended to many of the outstanding educators public officials and leading citizens of the area including F L Wilkenson who will represent Governor J Bracken Lee Secretary of State Ilcber J Bennion Jr Attorney General Clinton I) Vernon State Superintendent of Public Instruction E Allen Bateman President Aldous Dixon of Welter college James A Tutall president of Snow college President Howard S McDonald of Brigham Young Univcrsily President Horace Wubben of Mesa college Horace Rose executive secretary of the Utah High School Melvin Activities Association Wilson former principal of Carbon high school the mayors and city council members of Price and Helper the superintendents of various coal mines in Carbon and Fmcry counties the school board members and the county super- -' intendens of Carbon and Emery counties as well as the county superintendents of Grand Uintah end Duchesne districts executive fl'Mcrs of the Slate Board of Education William 0 JScntlcy Dr At-orn- ey Harold E Nelson Parley T Rich-iRay P Dyrcng Lynn S Richards Dr Wells T Drockbank William C Jensen A L Elmer N J Barlow and members of the Slate advisory Saff State Department of Education Vaughn L Hall Jennie Campbell J Easton Parrott N Blaine Winters Fred M Fowler Rodney A Ashby C Aileen Erickscn Von II Robertson L U Harmon and Robert A ns Nelsmi Beauties Selected Seven college girls were selected by school organizations as their candidates for queen of the dedication of the Carbon College athletic field Of these seven girls one will be voted queen and two as attendants by the student body in an election held today Tiie girls will be crowned duractivities at the ing half-tim- e football game tonight The girls selected by the various clubs: Shanna DcAngelcs Senate Valcnc Young Eaglette Enid Patsy Burdick Majorette Seaton Pi Gamma Chi Darlene Christensen Pep La Vac DcAngc-le- s Block “C" and Charmainc Hill Carboncttc Halftime Ceremonies Feature of the evening will be the first football game on the new field in which the Golden Eagles will meet the Mesa Junior College Mavericks from Grand Junc tion Colorado in the first of the Intermountain Junior College League games scheduled here ceremonies Colorful halftime under the direction of student body president John Jones will include the dedication and naming of the field the crowning of the queen and marching and maneuvers by the Noith Emery and Carbon bands and all college girls recruited by the Eaglette Club A dance following the game will feature the music of Jimmy Dart and his orchestra in the college gym City Council Responsible In 1047 Dr Jones suggested to the city council of Price that the college needed a grant of land for a new football field The reasons he listed were: the field ran the wrong way the sun would be in one of the team's faces the people living north of the field objected to the fence around the field and the lights had to be moved all the time a rodeo was slated Then Dr Jones went to the State Board of Education and was told that Carbon would get $25-0from the Board if the city of Price would grant the land Carbon College then enlisted the aid of representatives to the Utah legislature E K Olson and Frank Bonacci from the state Senate Val Cowles was asked to introduce a bil to get the $25000 The 00 arc open to both upper and lower divisions according to Mr Roy-lan- ce director “The by Moliere is a comedy of French life in 1670 translated from the French Under the auspices of the speech department the play will be produced and directed by Mr Roy-lan- cc who comments on the play: “Moliere a master of comedy has written one of the gayest livlicst and funniest plays in this story of the man who is determined to be a gentleman no matter to what extreme he has to resort" The play has fifteen characters both large and small parts with openings for backstage crew Mr Roylancc has scheduled another play for later in the year but as yet no information on it is available Would-Be-Gcntlema- n” bill was passed Late in 1947 the city council gave 97 acres of land Also in 1947 the state gave various state institutions money for building and Carbon received $38000 of that sum 19000 dollars of that money was used for the field in addition to the $25000 Three thousand Siberian elms 500 black locusts and 500 Russian olive trees were placed for a hedge around the new field |
