Show T5WX3 Former students are the best recruiting tool Dear Editor I consider my two years at the College of Eastern Utah as one of the most rewarding experiences in my life My tenure at CEU was hallmarked by learning per sonal growth and a positive college experience I enjoyed my experience at CEU so much that I told everyone 1 knew to attend CEU This fall my younger brother and his friend will attend CEU Another one of his friends will attend CEU next fall Academically CEU is outstanding The college’s small class size and personal interaction with faculty who have earned either a master's or doctorate degree in their field Nestled in the heart of Eastern Utah CEU offers a host of recreational activities The small size of the college makes many students and college employees feel like they are part of a large extended family One of the best recruitment tools is the positive experi ences of former students 1 have met many CEU students and former students who attended the college because of a family or friend positive experiences It is unfortunate that some members of the CEU community have neglected to make student’s experiences at the college positive The incidents that come to mind are members of the administration and campus police using their positions of power to intimidate students Certain students have been threatened as an effort to control their freedom of speech as defined in the United States Constitution’s first amendment In contrast to my uplifting experience at CEU their experiences have not been as enriching as they should have been A college should be an opportunity for growth and discovery It hinges on the fine line between a safe environment of support and understanding and the cold reality of the unknown A college administration faculty and staff should perform their jobs to the best of their abilities and try to make the college student friendly It is that these students have not known that self-evide- nt feeling during their tenure at CEU I feel sadness not only for them but for the college community I am grateful for my experience at CEU I have fond memories of CEU and remain a supporter of the college I will always maintain that CEU offers one of the best and education’s in the Utah higher education system But some CEU students may not be able to assert that opinion They will not remember how attending CEU enriched their life but how they felt ashamed and degraded while attending the college It doesn’t have to be like that The students should be CEU's most powerful recruiting tool by spreading the word to their friends and family The college administration faculty and staff can make the college a safe haven for students' study and It isn't too late With a few changes CEU can become that safe haven for all students Students and their families will tell others about how CEU helped them In turn more and more students will flock to CEU Recruitment and retention will increase as CEU’s most powerful recruitment tool works its magic cost-effecti- ve Leona Christensen For every negative thing you say immediately say 10 positive things Dear Editor As an employee of College of Eastern Utah 1 feel that I need to make my opinion known after reading Miranda Odendal's article in the March 6 1997 Eagle I do wish that the school newspaper would recognize more of the positive thing about CEU students the faculty its surrounding etc I do read a lot of negative things in the newspaper It is true that word of mouth is your best advertising But the negative word of mouth I would like to see more positive things in the paper Page 10 and 1 1 of the March 6 1997 newspaper had a lot of positive points This paper was only 12 pages king Two articles on the front page talk about our low enrollment and what we are doing about that Also on the front page an article about the Campus Police vs Price City Police what happened to "you scratch my back 111 scratch yours" It seems that CEU police are willing to scratch Price City's back Yes we are in a rural setting but that can be very positive Traffic crime air pollution and community bonding are some extreme positives Speaking as a parent I would much rather be raising my children or sending my children here than in an area where drugs gangs kidnappings rapes etc are a lot more prevalent I am a transplant from die Wasatch front and I have no desire to go back It did take some adjusting to the rural setting but it was well worth it I am not saying it is perfect here but it is a lot better than many other places I do agree that there needs to be more activities for the students here I don't know who or how but maybe there should be a student organization to arrange activities for the students The museum has many pamphlets and fliers about the area and the things to do and see The Continuing Ed Department offers classes like fly tying ballroom dancing and many others There is a poster about a science excursion that is up in the hallways There are many books about the San Rafael Swell In these books they tell you how where length time and challenge level of hikes or drives in the Swell Some roads in our mountains may or may not require drive so make sure you have the right kind of vehicle and necessities (some of the books recommend itcmsvchide) The mountains and deserts in southeast Utah are very beautiful Look at the wildlife rocks rock formation or just listen Have you noticed all the sounds out there? Maybe we don't have as many movie houses arcades bars etc but there are things to do you may just have to look a little harder As for the employees of College of Eastern Utah we are all great Has anyone taken notice to the campus police retrieving ed A question for the readers 1 """" by Mike Zahller velwpolnt editor Without straining your brain to much can anyone tell me the difference between a cult and an organized religion? I've been thinking about it heavily for the past couple of days and I'm stumped (Imagine that a debater at a loss for words!) Now I don't want to hear that cults are small and religions are big nor do I want t o hear that cults are full of looney people with eccentric beliefs and that religion is based upon sound logic I want to hear an understandable comprehensive answer because I can't seem to come up with one Can you? Answers and inquiries should contact the Eagle at ext 5250 or visit the Eagle office in the Durrant building keys locked in a car for a student or employee7This happens often The campus police escort students in the late evenings and different department employees when they are carrying something of extreme value Tkey have also tried to locate a class that a student is in do deliver a lost purse Not many people heard about the custodian who found a wallet with more (turn $ 1 0000 in it The student was thrilled that his wallet was found by someone honest Nothing was missing especially the money to pay his registration fees What about the teacher who gives out their home number and doesn't get upset when you actually do call I know Mary Bowen doesn't get upset The CEU cashier has numerous times walked with a student to different departments (admissions housing etc) to help resolve a problem the student has I have made many phone calls tracking down a payroll contract or lost time sheet so that an employee (student or other) will not have to wait until the next pay period to get paid Everyone knows Randy Chandler and Opi but do many people know that Opi has a water dish in the Business Office and many employees continually buy and give Opi doggy treats and are happy to do this These are the types of things that I see many of the CEU employee's doing I do need to make another statement about our campus police I think they are doing a great job Maybe thay (sic) have been a little too strong in some situations but know that they do a lot of positive things on campus So what if they pull a car over for speeding these are post certified officers who are state employees Does this mean that it is okay for someone to speed through the streets that students frequently cross because it should be Price City's responsibility? Does this mean Price City Officers have nothing better to do with their time than to sit up here mi ou’ campus and patrol for speeding? To me it looks as if they are relieving Price City Officers so that they can attend to more serious matters I thought if you were speeding no matter where you were that it was against the law Why should it be okay for the public to speed through CEU campus and put CEU students in jeopardy because Price City is too busy and the public doesn't want CEU police to have the right to issue speeding violations? If anyone has noticed the school zones that are patrolled frequently have fewer speeders wouldn't that be the same here If the campus police are patrolling the campus streets then as it is more known fewer people would speed in this area Doesn't that seem reason that our students are safer? As for my job here at CEU I think it is great I work in a great department where we all do our job and help each other with theirs Someone told me once that if you say anything negative about someonesomethi ng immediately say 1 0 positive things It's amazing how fast that negative isni as important I think that the students faculty staff and administration here are all great Sincerely Lisa Sherman payroll |
