Show The Eagle Page Thursday 2 What does a writer have to do to get a response from you unconcerned people by JD Conover staff writer The following paragraph Is to be read as If you were announcing a horse race thank you Aaaaaand heeee's off Silling at the keyboard writing editorials It's Conover that long haired sorry excuse for a human trying to invoke a response from an audience that needs to be checked for a pulse How are you guys doing out there? Do you even read these damn I need to make personal attacks on your character? OK I will Do things? How's this I bet you don't bother to respond to our opinion section for one or more of the following reasons Umm how "bout if I said you would rather look at our incredible reprints of black and white pictures because you can't comprehend any more than a small sentence printed as a caption under the photo Or what about if 1 stated that you didn't read the paper because your first urge was to wet on it like your mommy taught you Actually 1 want to point out that I'M JUST KIDDING I would also like to point out that the little box in the bottom comer of the page isn't there just to take up space (well OK I lied it is to take up space) but it's there to tell you if you don't agree with something we write let us know about it Somehow I doubt that I or anyone else on this staff is omniscient and writes all as it should be recorded in the passages of lime Also if you agree with what is said and would just like to support your point or add to it please do Now that I've got that off my chest let's gel down to business I was hoping to write something positive this time rather than criticize but those worldly elements around us have conspired again to irk me in more ways than one In fact there are three generally related events The one that has been a bane to me the longest was originally intended to promote my safety and general welfare It took form out of necessity and later pushed me to a point where I would have gladly burned to death in a fire so I wouldn't have to listen to the new alarm system go of! one more This job began last December I remember it because I was studying for my finals when they began drilling through the outside wall of the dorms and made the entire building vibrate The drilling continued for the remainder of final's week Quite curiously when finals ended the drilling did tool To top that off while 1 was here during the summer they again relumed to do the job nearly over again to compensate for poor workmanship and planning Have you ever taken a good look at the aesthetic qualities of our state of the art fire alarm system? I'm just wondering when Lagoon is going to donate the little bumper car dcalies so we can latch on and cruise around our campus in style Who knows maybe well have our own rapid transit system one day 1 hope our children like it! My point here is not only that the thing still doesn't work correctly to this day but also that it took a lot longer than it should have to put it in I wonder if the college got milked for huge sums of money and if so how much? Is our college easy game for those who choose to abuse the system and try to get something for nothing? It seems they could be The money could be used for other things that could better the institution like helping out the library or something I realize that things like the asbestos in the underground system needed to be removed but I can't help but wonder why things like that weren't done in the summer I wu here the whole time and the only event I witnessed wu the grounds people trying to turn the grass into a wild life refuge for water fowl u u Just sure water runs downhill when school started bustling with student activity it also started in with the major improvements that make our campus look like an urban renewal project We now have to deal with big piles of dirt and roped off areu from one group of people well another group of individuals tearing the roof off of the science building u u I really wish that someone would make me understand because I rewant to But to be frank and perfectly honest at this point in lime I At first it didn't bother me that the personnel installing the alarm ally think it's a bunch of nonsense invaded not only my classroom environment but my home as well (I'm one I hope the work is done soon and I wish those people well but I of the unfortunate ones who live in the dorms) I could handle a guy with 30 can't wait settle down to a nice undisturbed college atmosphere for the to pounds of tools dangling noisily from his belt drilling through the wall first time with a three foot long bit during a lecture I could also handle the countless number of invasions that mapped my room and later resulted in a dust left on One lut little thing I'm going to throw in is that it holds pretty my personal belongings that I still find to this day Even when they decided true that what cornu around goes around So to all the dishonest people that they were done (ha ha ha) and it wu time to test their new system I who have taken the college for a little money I hope you're proud of what literally heard the thing go off in excess of 80 times I still didn't get really you've done and I hope that your profits are embezzled by a snot nosed come mad and go on a killing spree puter whiz along with all your invutments failing miserably lime three-stal- Future of education depends upon today's young people by Corey Moser staff writer President Bush recently invited state governors to attend a summit conference to suggut solutions for the problems of education Not much in the way of new ideas came from the conference but it did call attention to the enormity of the problem EdltorMMWMMMMwMMM-MMwMMMMKJa- Shewmake ke News Editor Feature Editor Entertainment Editor Sports Editor Eagle Update Photographers Reporters How can we expect young people to have the long-iapatience necessary for learning when everyone around them seeks instant gratification? How can we expect young people to spend time studying when the nation is obsessed with entertainment and recreation unlike the avenues of knowledge and wisdom? m Will students respect their teachers when parents and others are eager to criticize both education and educators? And why would the best and brightest young people choose careers in education when teachers are one of the lowest paid of all college educated professionals?
