Show Page 2 Poetry readings set for March a Student disgusted with campus housing and drop of football spring break Joel Mena staff writer by With the end of fell and winter quarter approaching it teem that itudent cannot wait to get a far away from college ai ponible They will have almost completed six month of attending dauei and (pending the better pit of each day in building Thu they have earned and will utilize to the fulleat the week that hai become a part of every college undent' vocabulary in March "Spring Break"! Thi i the excuse students who are normally intelligent and rational give when they begin to drink and ran around very scantily dressed to see how many diffrent ways there are to insult the human body Some of the key spots to hit during spring break are the beach front areas of either coast The weather is usually great with temperatures in the 80's and no hint of snow anywhere Fl Lauderdale is the ultimate spot for the sun seekers during the festive break between quarters It has everything that a corrupt college student could warn except intelligent conversation This is prohibited during spring break It is estimated that over 100000 college students descend upon the beaches of Lauderdale during the week If your money does not allow you to head for the East Coast then perhaps California is more to your liking Palm Springs is the hot spot of the West Coast during this festive occasion Although it is not real close to the ocean there are so many swimming pools around you almost forget you are not by the ocean The disadvantage of going to Palm Springs is that you have to go through Las Vegas And if by chance you stop don't stay too long because you may get the gambling fever and lose the money that you brought for your fun in the sun week at Palm Springs For those of you who are forced to stay closer to home because of the typical college student’s bank account Lake Powell has become a good alternative for sun worshipers It might not be as warm as the coastal slates but there is plenty going on its sandy beaches during the break Qiff diving and skimpy bikins are some of the attractions at Lake Powell Also with its miles of blue water area it is an absolute oasis for water skiers It does get a little chilly at night However anyone with any intelligence can figure out how to stay warm Therefore take a warm sleeping bagl Winter may not be out of your system yet so you why not head up to the ski resorts of Utah Park City is a wonderful place to spend the week with temperatures in the 40s and lots of blue skies Bikini clad coeds can also be seen sunning on the decks After a day of skiing the resort offers a variety of activities during the evening hours It really doesn't matter where you go for your break but it is important to get away from school and enjoy some R and R Remember students still have one quarter remaining and isn't that a nice thought Lastly since I am transferring to SUSC spring quarter on a football schlarship I would like to thank everyone on the Eagle staff die past two years It has been great working with some of you Even Avan wasn't that bad nor was having to put up with a female editor this year I would especially like to thank Susan for giving me the opportunity to work on the staff It has been a wonderful experience and has taught me to never to be afraid of using my first amendment freedom of voicing my opinions So to all my faithful readers I bid a humble farewell and I thank eveyone for their comments about my articles both good and bad And to SUSC all I can say is look out for my opinions in its newspaper I still have a lot of them Entertainment Editor Trevor H Olsen Feature Editor Avan Thayn Cus Magann Sports Editor UHMmraTtmi Elizabeth Reporters Bisquera Bryant Theresa Green Denise Marinos Lee Mathie Joel Mama Rich Nielsen Slacee Pene Frame and C Hamaker PhotorephenMMNHMHMMMMMMmChris -- The Eagle is the official student publication of the College of Eastern Utah Opinions expressed fat this publication may or may not reflect the official opinion of CEU or the associated students of the College of Eastern Utah The Eagle office is located in Room 111 of the Main Building CEU's 50th Anniversary by Theresa Green staff writer Poets-in-the-Scho- ols Beginning Monday 7 March at 8 pm in the Alumni Room and Monday 28 March at 8 pm in the Little Theatre the College of Eastern Utah will be presenting a Poetry Readers Series Dear editor Since this is the last paper that will be printed during my time at CEU I feel the need to express an opinion First of all CEU campus housing sucksl This is the only college that I've ever seen that has limited visiting hours for the opposite sex I was talking to a friend at Weber State who told me that members of the oposite sex can visit at any time provided that they don't sleep there The next housing grief that I have is quiet hours I understand the need for quiet hours and believe that they are a necessity but when can college students enjoy something as simple as loud music at certain times of the day or night? In my room at Townhouse we can't play our stereo for two seconds before our head resident is banging on the door threatening to confiicate the stereo and evict ns from housing My final complaint about homing iialchohoL I understand that there are Mate laws on alchohol but lets be realistic I don't know too many college students that don't drink so maybe housing could let up a little as far as searching for it I'm talking about drag dogs and 4 am room checks My question about housing is this: is this college housing or is this a romper-rooday care center? President Petersen for the sake of CEU's future students please be more liberal with campus housing rales I don't think I could write a final rebuttle without commenting on the ax of the football team If dropping football it a last resort for the survival of CEU as a college then it just had to be done I believe that statement like I believe this is Georgetown University I feel bad for the freahmen football players because they are forced to either walk on at other college! or quit playing footbalL I feel that CEU should have kept football one more year and not recrait any freshmen This way next year’s sophomores might have had positive experience at CEU Instead they are left out in the cold but hey who cares? I havn'l seen anyone at CEU express any concern toward the former players I would also like to thank the rtudents who have heavily criticised the dropping of football in recent issues of the school paper I think that I apeak for most of the football players when I say thanks to Joel Main a for hia response to AK When I read negative articles about the quality of players in the sport I am reminded that it la eaiy to push pen than to have the guts to sign her name m i Kloeflkom helped initiate the program in Nebraska and served as Master Poet for several years in Lincoln and other Nebraska towns He was named Nebraska State Poet in the fall of 1982 and won die 1978 Nebraska Championship for hog-calli- ng William Kloofkom The readings will feature some of die best known poets from throughout the US with some from Utah The March 7 reading will feature William Klodkom He is an English professor at Nebraska Wesleyan University in Lincoln Nebraska and has been teaching there since 1962 Klocflcom has been writing poetry for about fifteen years and has published fifteen books A few of his books have included Alvin Turner as Farmer Cottonwood Countv Not Snrh Bad Place To Be and Platte Valiev Homes tend Many of his poems have appeared in periodicals and newspapers including Prairir Schooner Kansas Onmiwfa Qhifl Review Beloit Poetry lonmsl and many others His poetry has also appeared in many different anthologies The poetry reading on Monday 28 March will be given by Leslie Nonis Norris is an poet and fiction writer a critic a writer for children a translator and a professor He is the author of fourteen books of poems short stories and childrens' pieces his most recent being Walking the White Fields a volume of poems His first selection of stories entitled Sliding has also sold well Norris has received many honors Among these honors arc: a reading at the dedication of Dylan Thomas' tomb in Poets' Comer at Westminster Abbey and the Katherine Mansfield award in fiction for the best short story published in the entire world He has lectured widely including schools such as BYU University of Washington and East Carolina State University award-winnin- g xoxo 0 00D© only initials Well enough negative said I will get an associates degree from CEU I have the athletic department to thank for that I would alio liko to thank lha administration the rtaff and the itudenti who helped me through school Last but least I would liko to thank my roommates and the team for helping not only mo but each other get through hell Goodbye CEU sincerely yours SJL (Scott Lageiquist) All t - shirts 15 off March 3 through 1 1 |
