Phone 637-337- 7 instructed the art of frisbee throwing at the Smithsonian Institute in Washington DC Boyle said the hardest part about practicing with a frisbee in Utah in the winter months is finding an indoor place large enough to throw the frisbee “You have to practice year round to become very com- - play basketball because before I picked up the sport of frisbee everyone associated me with the game of basketball — and they couldn’t understand why I would give up my basketball career to throw a frisbee” Now that his basketball career at CEU is almost over Boyle plans to exchange his basketball for his frisbee and head for a suntanning beach to run in the sand and practice his technique of frisbee throwing Richard Robinson head of the mining department of College of Eastern Utah said that the mining industry will level off soon but that people shouldn’t expect to at once have thcf same prosperity as there was before the recession “It will be a slow recovery It will probably take a couple of years for the industry to be at its previous peak” he added Robinson said that training is at its highest this quarter since more miners want to pick up certifications to help them get or keep a job A person can be certified in 27 areas but the first six are the most important These include mine foreman fireboss electrical EMT dust and noise and mine rescue According to Earl Lund machine shop instructor in the vocational center there are job openings in Salt Lake City for machinists “There are always jobs for good machinists” he said He added that he places his students most of whom have jobs before completing the course "My biggest problem” he said “is holding the students in school to complete the course Usually they have a job while going to school and want to leave to make more money” Lund stated that his enrollment is substantially up from last quarter He projects for the future more openings for machinists especially in He is tooling and excited about a new high technology machine' the shop will be receiving which will increase the capability of the students to work with newer die-maxi- ng machines Ike Fassio head of the automotive service depart ment stated that more work will be available in the future for auto mechanics “More people are holding on to and fixing up their old cars rather than buying new ones” he said “which generates more work for the mechanics” Usually he places a student before he leaves school but with the recession on this year it might take a little longer He states that a job is always available for a good mechanic Young people are not daunted by the recession as his class enrollment has increased approximately 40 percent” he added optimistic outlook is shown by all three of the An vocational classes They feel that things will get better soon and that a job is almost always available for a person who does good work in his chosen occupation ' ' |
