Show THE GOLDEN Page Two EAGLE Monday April 20 1170 Letters to the Editor To the editor In behalf of the executive council I would like to extend a special thanks to two CEU students who helped not only student government but student activities as well The dance scheduled for last Friday (April 3) was at the risk of being cancelled because of high costs of bands and of revenue and fear of lack of support to meet this cost Jerry Carlson and Terry Fry went out of their way to help us secure the band publicize in the downtown area and the school and carry through with management and responsibility of collection at the door This concern shown by Terry and Fish is very much appreciated Too many times the voice of the criticizer is heard above the voice of those willing to work together to improve conditions It’s time we start listening to the majority of stedents on campus JoAnn Tryon Vice President of Cultural Affairs Dear JoAnn Thank you for your letter on behalf of the executive council I also feel that active students should be complimented on their interest in and desire to make student activities at CEU a success I am of the opinion that the positive approach of of giving recognition to those who are active and promoting spirit at CEU is probably the best remedy for apathy Accenting the positive beats the negative approach of criticizing those who do not take active interest However criticism has its place for those who are neglecting their responsibilities But criticism should be constructive and with the intent of improving and building rather than tearing town I hope students will respond to your letter by writing letters to the editor and informing the school of the good news along with the bad expressing their opinions of student government student activities the school's administration etc Sincerely Thomas J Holdaway Editor Dear Editor: This letter is written as a plea to every member of CEU’s student-bod- y Elections for studentbody officers are drawing near Last week petitions for offices were circulated around campus This letter comes too late for petitioning but not for the general election It is time for all of us to take a took at who we might want to guide our school in the coming year It is said that we learn from experience and I do feel that this year has been an erpericnce We heard many complaints from our officers about student apathy But what of our officers' apathy? Many activities were not supported by the studentbody but in that same respect many of the officers were not in attendance either Also many of our officers were so apathetic toward this school that they left the studentbody high and dry in the middle of the year I am not intending to say that this year’s officers have not done anything much to the contrary There have been some who have done much to better our school But these were a select few and to these people we owe our whole year I think that before voting this year each of us should make an effort to meet the people who are running to learn of their ideas and leadership qualities We should took at their past performance for CEU and after considering these things we should make sure that each candidate understand his obligation to serve the student-bod- y FOR HIE WHOLE YEAR Sincerely An Interested Member of the Studentbody THE GOLDEN EAGLE Brent West Advisor Thomas - Editor Assistant Editor — — Business Manager — Advertising Managers Sports Editor Feature Reporters — — Lindane News Reporters — — J To the editor: In his 1970 State of the Union Message President Nixon said that the wealth of our nation will increase fifty percent in the next decade Then he post'd the question: "Docs that mean that we'll be fifty percent richer fifty percent happier or fifty percent better off?" Also he said that “dean air clean water and open space should be the birthright of every American" Now picture the year 1980 a CEU graduate of 1970 is telling his five year old son what it used to be like fishing in Huntington Canyon and water skiing at Scofield "Too bnd you can't experience it son because Huntington Canyon is now a housing development and Scofield is a health hazard I think maybe our nation is fifty percent mere populated" Will this be the case for the future? No not if the 1970 CEU and U of U and Bcrkcly and Harvard graduates do something about it On April 22 on most of the campuses in the nation there will be a teach-i- n concerning population and pollution control To us at CEU it could be a first step Maybe we could get a guest lecturer and relabel it a leam-i- n Or maybe we could plop ourselves beneath a weeping willow on the campus and hold a discussion on ecology How about getting some fifty to hundred students and teachers into a small room to discuss the effects of overcrowding? "Yes son that's a nice trout you caught but just because it's " bigger than mine A concerned student socio-politic- Dear C S: Thank you for your concern and for bringing this matter to the attention of the student body at CEU Now just a word to the student body Do we How about it? Do we want a "Icam-in- " or a "teach-in?- " want to learn more about the present and future state of our ecology?
