By KATHLEEN MONROE Do you know how much money the school loses if you arc absent? The average student doesn't dream that when he is absent from school he is actually costing the school money Every day the state gives the public schools approximately $150 per porson When the attendance is good the school makes money when there arc too many absences the school goes "in the red” If attendance is kept to a high standard students not only will be ahead in their studies but will also be making money for their school A Tribute to Our Team By KATHLEEN MONROE This is a tribute for a job well done to our mighty heroes the Carbon Dinos They have done their best and fought their hardest to win their games and they have succeeded When the going has been rough they have not given up but have struggled fiercly and have come through with colors flying They have shown true sportsmanship and a loyal devotion to their school They are rated as one of the top teams in the state and as far as the students of Carbon High School are concerned they are the best football players in the whole world New Law Enforcement Saves Lives By KENNETH MILLER The day dark and overcast with a light rain falling was soon to co mi to an end It had been a very uneventful day for most of the occupants of the large yellow school but which raced quietly to its destination where its first riders would disperse As the bus pulied off the road and came to a complete stop a small group of students piled out And then The loud shrill screeching sound of rubber tires attempting to grip on the shiny slippery surface of the rain drenched pavement was heard throughout the valley A large metal mass hurtled toward the tiny body of an innocent child at a velocity equal to that of a speeding locomotive A neerie scream for help came forth as the fearful child stood petrified in th center of the highway unable to locate protective covering This small plea for mercy came abruptly to an end as the morbid sound of metal against flesh drowned all clamor within the area The speeding car came to a squealing stop a short distance away Students within the bus stood in shock as they looked on with horrified faces Local residents quickly rushed to the scene the police arrived and following close behind was the ambulance The orderlies immediately went to work as they attempt to load thes mall mangled and disfigured body The ambulance left the scene was cleared leaving the highway clean and bare and the neighborhood slowly came back In life of the rain on the highway a family Once again the pitter-pattis without a child a driver may be charged for manslaughter Although this account is fictitious it could have happened to the best of drivers Now however riders of buses are fully protected by the new zeal that law enforcement officers have been showing by enforcing a past law This law states: Cars approaching or following a stopix’d school bus that is loading or unloading students may not pass until the bus starts out again This law if enforced should save the lives of many innocent children Rural families should be thankful for Ihc law as should the owners of all vehicles This new law which is for the good of all rather than a few protects the driver as well as the students er Congressman Slates Academies Exam Demetrious The Philosopher Ah all the world’s a stage and the people merely players (if we may borrow from an English playwright) Yet the funniest of people are the players or as wo call them ACTORS Fnmnus is the story of a fellow named Marx who maintained that guests at Hollywood cocktail parties never listen to the conversation To prove it when he shook hands at the next party with the hostess he said “I'm sorry I'm late but it took me longer to strangle my aunt that I expected "Yet beamed the hostess “I'm so happy you came" nil in-de- d" Well the old saying goes "listen before you speak” Don't believe all you hear though Story has it that the first time Martha Rayc ate at the famous Pump Room in Chicago she was a member of a dinner party hosted by Jimmy Durante When a waiter passed carrying a portion of (lamb on n flaming sword) Miss Rayc asked what on earth that was Durante explain ed "A customer who left only a ten dollar tip" Oh well we have the Milky Way shis-hkeb- ab Ijot of acts go on at the Way and that reminds me of the time of the magician who was seeking booking at Radio City Music Hall He said ‘T’ve got a new trick that will panic them" "I saw a woman in half” said the magician "Call that a new trick?" scoffed the manager "They're been doing that around here for years" "Oh yeh" countered the magician "Lengthwise" Jayne Mansfield took some books back to the library the other day They were: Stop Forgetting Use Your Head and How to Remember The books were three months overdue I guess if the librarian was a male she wasn't charged much Now a bit of seriousness In the old country the people used drachmas instead of dollars It is the currency of that nation Now since they arc of no monetary value in the U S we feel free to give them to the people This column wishes to give its first drachma to the Block "C" club for the good work they did this year in homecoming Compared to some other years they have progressed greatly School or a Fire Sale? Note Taking Aids Scholars By FRED BABCOCK Since most college instri iters use the lecture method to present lesson material in their classes the person attending college for the first time has somewhat of a problem in the taking of notes If a student takes good notes he will be surprised at how much they will aid him in studying and reviewing the material after the lecture In some classes the lecture material docs not parallel that in teh text hence if good legible notes are taken the student can study Iho instiuctor's lecture in addition to the information available in his text student should take his notes in a form that will he legible when cold an I will not have to lx rewritten If notes are taken in ink it will lie easier to read them than if they are taken in pencil Using only A one side of a page he finds is an advantage in case there is additional material on the subject to be given In this case he can place the notes on the back of the paper A student should use only one looselcaf binder for all his nob’s and separate them by dividers into class groups If this is done there will be very little chance of his taking the wrong materials to class with him What Is The Answer Students? Homecoming is the most important event of the school year young alike join forces to celebrate the occasion especially to at tend the game where dear old Carbon is expected to "come through" once more and take all honors We did didn’t we? How many of you know that? Since so many of our students left shortly after the half one would have inferred that the game was over why? Don't we care enough about our team or our school to respect them on Homecoming Day before an imposing group of ourtotownspeople and the opposing yell for them and to support team? Don't we respect them enough the yell leaders in their efforts to create a little spirit This subject is getting worn out Why don’t we have school spirit like other schools? Is the question Are we too different or too special to dig in and have a part in joy and fun that's derived from being really interested? Shall we dispense with football? What is your answer students?
