Show THE CARBONICLE Volume 16 Carbon College Price Utah Friday April 20 1951 Dr Jones Reports on R0TC for Carbon Teacher Employment a Possibility Contracts for teacheds of college classes will be approved by the State Board of Education on May 4 This word comes from Dr Jones Contracts will be sent out as provisional contracts since it is not yet certain how much money will be available for junior colleges for next year The special session of the legislature will meet on June 4 and will make appropriations for school needs If expected revenue is forthcoming the May 4 contracts will be used Otherwise they may have to be altered Dr Jones advises that Superintendent Harmon is studying the possibility of a salary increase for district teachers including those in the high school Contracts may not be issued to these teachers until after the meeting of the legislature Meanwhile it may be expected that letters to teachers will advise them of their reemployment Seme Carbon teachers have already indicated their intention not to return Dr Aaron E Jones returned recently from the sixth annual conference on Higher Education held in Chicago His chief purpose in going to the conference was to try to get a ROTC unit for Carbon college Bills now before congress would make possible the establishment' of such units in junior colleges However Dr Jones says perhaps nothing short war would make of an all-o- ut advisable or necessary such developments In the event of the passage of the junior college bills there might be branches of established units put into junior colleges from the University of Utah and the Agricultural college Under such a plan one military man would be sent to each junior college to train students Those who succeeded would be put into the third-yegroup upon entering the sponsoring organization Dr Jones will follow up this possibility if and when the bills pass congress Achievement Tests Herbert Larsen reports that three out of five achievement tests have been given to the juniors in the fields of social studies natural science and mathematics Carbon's weakness seems to be in social studies The national average is 500 and Carbon's 434 The national average for natural science is 516 and Carbon's 503 Carbon ranks high In mathematics as the national average is 488 and Carbon's 482 Yet to be given are tests in general intelligence and English These tests are valuable guides to the administration of the college in determining the strengths and weaknesses of their program They also benefit the individual student by pointing out his weaknesses Mr Larsen also stated that the seniors will be given an interest inventory test to determine their major fields of interest These will be followed up with specific aptitude tests and group counseling on occupations All of the tests arc scored by machine This eliminates all errors and any personal prejudices that might exist Number 23 Carbon Students Place High in Drama
