Teenager By Mikio Moriyasu PART 17 We departed the opera house and walked towards an even older section of the city which contained several old churches cathedrals and apartment buildings These contigw ous buildings which house stores and shops on the ground level and apartments on the remaining floors were originally constructed around the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries as the private residences for the wealthy although it was never directly mentioned one could assume these structures were modified into apartments at or near the time of the 1912 revolution As we walked passed these structures few of the delegates were taken by the different architectural styles exhib ited on the facades These facades are decorated withvariety of ornate trim and cast iron work around the windows doors and along the roof lines Interestingly enough the only indication of the structures noble heritage are the family crests which still adorn the tops of the door frames We soon arrived at the first of many religious houses on our walking tour The stone cathedral is one of the oldest in the area and has been in use since approximately the sixteenth century and is still in use today by one of the acceptable non-state religions The age of the structure is immediately recognizable by the latin that adorns the facade directly over the large double wooden doors From there the delegation was led through the streets to the oldest known church in the city The church constructed in the 1500 was the private house of religion for one of the more wealthy families in the city at that time The church is nowmuseum and is in remarkable condition both inside and out On the outside the building is decorated withgood deal of cast iron work Which over the years has developed an attractive black patina Upon viewing the structure for the first time it seemed odd that there were no windows in the upper portions of the structure which was about the size ofthree story apartment Despite the churchornate facade the delegation was not prepared for what lay ahead of us inside The entire interior of the building wasthree story domed atrium The only illuminati on inside the church came fromring of windows about ten feet off the floor andskylight located at the top of the dome The dome of the atrium was ornately decorated with white trim which surrounded several dozen sky blue recessed alcoves Within each one of these alcoves wassmall carved wood statue of an angel The centerpiece of the structure was the painted carved wood crucifix which was located on the back wall In addition to all of the carved decoration and trim the interior was painted white and sky blue What was most interesting about the interior however was the fact that over the four centuries the original paint had not peeled nor had it faded to any great extent After departing the enchanting little church the delegation was directed towards another house of worship The walk to the church waspleasant one as we casually strolled through the narrow shop lined cobblestone streets It was during this walk that our tour guide deviated from our route and took us inside what first appeared to bepharmacy Once inside however the delegation discovered that the quaint rustic shop was not justpharmacy but also an apothocary museum All along the shelves were bottles containing all sorts of drugs chemicals and powders On one side of the room were jars which contained various pills and other medi cines After spending several minutes in the museum the delegation returned to our route back towards the church Unlike the other churches we had visited on our walking tour the church itself wasrather plain red stone structure What made it so different however was the large statue made out of the same red stone as the church in the rear courtyard The statue was ofpriest dressed in his ceremonial robes carryingbible in one hand and blessing the passers-by with the other few of the delegates formedmakeshift human pyramid and tried to shake the statuehand As the afternoon wore on the delegation was led to its last stop on this our first walking tour We walked in and out of the medieval city until we arrived at small courtyard surrounded by apartments In one corner of the court behind an iron gate wassmall private woodframed 111m Although the alter was over fourhundred years old the fine craftsmanship and detail of the carved crucifix were clearly Visible even though we were at least twenty feet away As soon as we left the courtyard and the alter the tour ended The delegates were told that the rest of the afternoon was theirs to do with as they pleased until dinner time As the delegates split up and went on to explore the city on their own few of us ended up following two of our leaders onround-about route back to the hotel As we walked through the downtown area it was interesting to see how much less alien and less hostile vov was compared to Leningrad The city lit by the summer sun was both warm and inviting The people were active lively and were just simply brighter than those we had seen in Leningrad This was particularly interesting considering the fact that the inhabitants ofvov were no more outgoing than their Leningrad counterparts Eventually our small group arrived at one of presumably several hard currency shops invov we only saw and visited one What was inside was completely unexpected All along the walls of the shop were freshly shipped boxes of televisions VCR component stereos boom boxes and other forms of electronic home entertainment What was so amazing about this find was the fact that all of the items carried popular Japanese brand names Sony Toshiba and Panasonic were the most prevalent Even more interesting were the food stuffs marketed by the shop Aside from the caviar and vodka the shop soldvariety of Soviet American British and German soft drinks bottled waters and alcoholic beverages was tempted to purchase an orange soda and tried to only to discover thathad unwittingly violated some form of procedure Asresult was quickly admonished by the clerk As it turned out not being able to purchase the soda allowed me to use my money to buy another fabled Soviet food item ice cream Beforehad gone on the trip family friend warned me that her daugh ter had purchased some ice cream and had become seriously ill after eating it presumably due to the lack of pasturization Asresult was somewhat concerned as to the overall purity of what was definitely one of the delegations favorite cold treats Our concerns were easedlittle during our pre-trip briefings when we were encouraged by an individual who had visited the Soviet Union many times before to wholeheartedly devour as much ice cream as we could get our hands on few blocks away from the hard currency shop was an elderly Woman selling ice cream fromstreet side cart to several people who were lined up Our Russian speaking guide approached the cart and carefully laid some coins on the cart and slid them over to the merchant She literally reacted as if he had insulted her honor and admonished him for what he had done Those of us who stood by wondered what our leader did to tick her off so badly When he returned he told us that the woman told him in no uncertain terms to get in line and to pay the right amount In any case our small group did get in line paid the right price and spent the next few minutes eating some very welcomed de licious ice cream Eventually our group made it back to the hotelfew hours before dinner took this opportunity to restbit because after dinner the delegation was to go tolocal discotheque for night on the town To Be Continued 11 l HOMMA CARPET CLEANING COMPANY CALL FOR APPOINTMENT 265-0519 DON and YEIKO HOMMA 112 but it was from them thatheard of Toyohiko Kagawa Japanbestknown Christian This was some time in the 1930s and Kagawa had come to the United States on one of his preaching missions Kagawa preached an unorthodox brand of Christianity that had an universal appeal It had to do With matters like social justice for the oppressed the hungry in Japanslums and the folly of military aggression He seemed to haveselfassumed mission of making fat cats uncomfortable and by and large it appealed to Issei who certainly were not among the privileged didndwell further on Kagawa until some months ago when George Yasukochi of Berkeley told meKagawa biography was being written in observance of the 100th anniversary of his birth It was sponsored by the American Committee for the Kagawa Centennial Project and the author was Robert Schildgen of Berkeley California The book titled Toyohiko Kagawa Apostle of Love and Social Justice has been published Centenary Books 1442-A Waltnut St 415 Berkeley CA 94709 and it ispleasant surprise One does not expect much of publications like this but Schildgen has producedbook that is readable balanced and scholarly meaning there are plenty of footnotes to document an unusual story Kagawa emerges as something ofsingle-minded eccentric but eccentricity is often the hallmark of individuals of intense dedication He has been compared to Ghandi and Sister Theresa While acknowledging his tremendous influence Schild gen considers such comparisons hardly appropriate Schildgen writes that Kagawa had an enormous ego basked in public attention and was an inexhaustible self-promoter withdriving need for recognition But he lived ascetically and used the attention he enjoyed to promote his causes Schildgen notes Many of the reforms Kagawa fought for have been incorporated into modern Japanese society It now enjoys universal suffrage freedom for unions and political organizations adequate medical care good education decent housing vastly improved land ownership rights and numerous other social services which he tirelessly promoted The cooperative movement which Kagawa pushed vigorously has flourished The peace movement is one of the worldstrongest While Christianity has not spread as Kagawa had hoped at least in numbers of conversions it continues to havesignificant impact on the nationvalues Schildgen mentions but does not venture to assay the role of the postwarS occupation in those reforms However he does suggest that Kagawacharisma led Americans to ascribe to him power beyond what he really had in Japan The desire to revere him was so strong Schildgen writes that his followers in the West placed him on an altar that removed him from the tensions of genuine dialogue Be that as it may this volume does an excellent job of putting the Kagawa story in perspective Ka Asian Arts Festival At Salt Palace The Asian Association of Utah is among 17 sponsors of the 1989 Asian Arts Festival on Saturday May ii at the Salt Palace Assembly Hall
