Mikio Moriyasu PART 10 After passing the Museum of Religion and Atheism we returned to the bus stop in front of the department store and waited for our ride back to the hotel The return trip alJWed us time to take our last lingening look at Leningrad before we left the next day The one thing which stuck in my mind was the feeling of sheer dreariness infew of the neighborhoods that we passed through ll not soon forget the gray run-down buildings and the dirty streets However also wonforget the lush green parks and parkways which helped to bring life to those drab walls After about fifteen minutes the bus arrived at our stop right in front of the hotel and we tiredly disembarked The minute my roommate andentered our room we sacked out The next day wasvery busy and hectic one awoke earlier than usual and began packing whatcould in preparation for our afternoon departure from Leningrad After packing whatcould my roommate andwent downstairs to have breakfast few of the delegates decided to revisit the Beriozka and purchasefew items before we left Following breakfast we cleaned up and cautiously ventured outside to wait for the bus say cautiously ventured because of the fact that throughout our stay in Leningrad number of black marketeers hung around our hotel like vultures just waiting for us to come out in the open so they could makedeal We discovered that the more determined marketeers had been literally camping out on our doorstep each night and had been staking us out in the mornings looking for the most opportune time to make their move Eventually it became painfully obvious that the marketeers would not leave us alone no matter what the cost to their life freedom and most notably personal hygiene One of the delegates joked near the end of our stay in Leningrad that the men should trade their deodorants with the marketeers with the statement that if they used them they could increase their trade by being less offensive to potential traders It did not take long for the delegation who was so gung-ho on black market trading during the first day in the city to do their best to avoid associating with these leeches as we referred to them not only because they were obnoxious but because the longer they hung around the greater the chance that the police would come an experience that the delegation did not need Sure enough there were marketeers waiting on the sidewalk However after some skillful footwork we walked fast we were able to dodge the marketeers and peacefully boarded the bus We got off at the same stop as the day before and directed ourselves towards the Beriozka As the delegates walked up Nievsky Prospeckt we got an idea of what morning rush hour is like in the Soviet Union The wide sidewalks on either side of the street were full of people walking towards work and towards the many shops which line the entire length of the street There were so many people that it was like wading throughsea of individuals all crowded together moving both directions In fact there were few times during our walk to the Beriozhe that one or two of the delegates became entangled inwave of people walking in the opposite direction In contrast to the sidewalks the street was virtually free of heavy traffic as compared to rush hour traffic in most major metropolitan areas in the United States One of the oddest moments that we experienced during our last outing in Leningrad was to see what little traffic there was being held up by the sheer number of pedestrians who were crossing the street disregarding the dictates of the traffic lights and the donwalk signs In spite of the problems created by thelarge number of people up and about that morning the delegates were still able to dolittle lastminute sightseeing We took photographs of the Museum of Religion and Atheism ofRussian Orthodox church undergoing repairs for the upcoming celebration of the Soviet India trade accords and of the street in general As we continued to plow our way to the Beriozka we decided to stop atSoviet bookstore directly across the street from the Museum of Religion and Atheism Our guide had referred one of the delegates who was with us on this excursion to this store but because of our schedule she was unable to visit it earlier When we entered we were amazed at the size of the store four to five stories and the wide variety of print material that it carried In the book sales urea alone we were able to find books on politics socialism entertainment geography and history The one subject that received the most liter any attention however was Lenin We found dozens of books on his life his teachings his philosophies and his role in both the Revolution and as the first Soviet premier Our curiosity concerning the rest of the store got the better of us and we decided to ignore the book sales areas and continue onto the second floor Once there we discovered to our overwhelming surprise shelves full of picture postcard sets What was even more surprising was the wide variety of subjects that were featuredyin the hundreds of sets that we saw The topics ranged from historical landmarks and architecture to the museums and the artwork located within few of the delegates purchased several postcard sets not only as souvenirs but to mail home as well As we continued to look around the second floor we discovered that the store also soldwide selection of maps There were maps of the world maps of Leningrad maps of the various Soviet Socialist Republics even historical maps tracing the significant battles fought by the Soviets during the Revolution and during World War 11 One of the more interesting selections of printed material also sold on the second floor was propaganda posters There were posters of every size shape and color dealing with as many subjects as one could think up There were posters promoting the twenty-seventh Communist party congress posters promoting the Soviet factory worker and posters promoting economic and political success through Communism and socialism From the delegates Viewpoint however the most entertaining of these posters were the ones which portrayed the west United States and NATO as the epitome of corruption degradation decadence and power hungry warmongers the best of these posters portrayed NATO asgiant black octopus spreading its black evil over the world One of the most interesting social aspects of the Soviet Union is the way that the majority of the people shop In this country We are told about the long lines sometimes two or three hours long that the Soviets must wait in in order to buy their goods It is no wonder that they must wait in these lines When an individual goes shopping in the Soviet Union he must first go to the counter which has the item he wishes to purchase line number one When he finally reaches the counter he must indicate to the salesperson which item he wishes to buy The salesperson then hands the individualslip of paper which has on it the stock number of the item being purchased and the employee number of the sales person The individual must then take this slip to the cashier line and pay for his goods The cashier then hands himreceipt which the individual must take back to the same line he stood in before in order to pick up his goods Several times during our trip the delegates had to endure this slow and somewhat ludicrous process especially in the small souvenir shops bookstores department stores and surprisingly enough in the high price areas of the Beriozka stores After spending about half an hour in the bookstore we departed and continued on our way to the Beriozka When we got there we discovered shelves full of lacquered trays dolls ornamental figurines carved toys and carved centerpieces We also found to our overwhelming joy Coca Cola in the refrigerated goods portion of the store we were beginning to get tired of all the Pepsiwe were drinking To our disappointment however it tasted as if it had been watered down After purchasingfew items the delegates decided to return to the bus stop as it was nearing the time that we were to leave the city madedetour back to the bookstore to purchasefew more maps and then ran back to the bus stop hoping thatwould be able to get back in time to pack all of my purchases before we had to leave It appeared thatwas the last delegate to leave the city untilfew more stragglers from our delegation arrived also carrying packages To Be Continued HIROSHIMA KENJlN KAI TO LEAD PEACE MARCH UtahnAgainst Nuclear Arms Race will hold Story Of The Issei Immigrants Powerlessness isrecurring theme ofapanese immigrant history says American historian Yuji Ichioka For the first time in The Issei The World of the First Generation Japanese Immigrants 18851924 The Free Press New York Y July 11 1988 22 95 FPT ISBN 0-02-915370-0 Ichioka tells the moving story ofremarkable group of Asian immigrants The first generation ofapanese immigrants called the Issei their children born in this country are the Nisei came to mainland America in the years from 1885-1924 Like other immigrant groups they sought better lives for themselves and their families But because Asians were exclu led from the Naturalization Acts of 1790 and 1870 the Japanese were deemed aliens ineligible to citizenship This statutory classification provided the basis for virulent discrimination in every aspect of the Isseis lives The Japanese did not have the legal or political power to fight back After decades of residence CaliforniaAlien Land Law denied Issei farmers the right to own or lease land Earlier if Issei were grudgingly admitted tounion local the union agreed to lower wages for them Just as thousands ofvsingleapanese laborers were sending for wives from homes theapanese government refused to issue pass ports of picture-brides And when Issei sent their children to public schools the San Francisco school board tried to segregate them The Japanese tried very hard to become part of the fabric of American life They worked studied and NJAHS Receives Contribution From Takahashi Foundation SAN FRANCISCO-The Nationalapanese American Historical Society was the recent recipient of000 contribution from the Tomoye and Henri Takahashi Charitable Foundation This is the second year that NJAHS was honored by the Foundation In making this grant to the Historical Society Mr and Mrs Takahashi explained that the Takahashi Foundation was organized in order to help fund groups which were operating onnon-profit charitable basis in order to disseminate information on the cultural traditional and contemporary issues of the Japanese to the other fellow Americzms The fund encourages an exchange of cultural information in order to preserve and to promote harmony and friendship and understanding between the two countries Mrs Takahashi added The annual income from the sale of one of our maj or real estate properties will enable us to contribute to the vari ous Nikkei-funded and Nikkeifounded non-profit organizations we believe to be the most worthy Our board of directors which is our family decides which community organizations will be the bene ciaries Our decision is based on the information we have gleaned or observed through the previous year Mr Takahashi joined Mrs Takahashi in saying that the Historical Society was selected to bebene ciary because they enjoyed their membership and participation in the Societyvarious activities and programs Also they both feeldeep interest in the purposes of the organization Admitting to being workaholics Mr Takahashi said they work six daysweek and decided to set up the foundation to share their success with various worthy charitable organizations in the Nikkei commu nity In accepting this generous contribution from the Takahashi Charitable Foundation Dr Cliffordeeda vice president of NJAHS announced that this grant would be applied toward ongoing projects Uyeda publicly thanked the Takahashis who have been active supporters of the society by saying that It is contributions of this sort that help us to continue our various programs to preserve and to disseminateapanese American history here in the United States The deep interest and concern shown by Mr and Mrs Takahashi not only in our organization but in the otherapanese American groups accompanied by their generosity have truly helped our community accomplish many of the important programs that otherwise could not have been undertaken We trust that the Takahashis will continue to find these activities important and meaningful to the community published numerous newspapers They married had children bought property and established businesses They formed trade and civicvassociations lobbied labor unions for admission to their ranks found loopholes in the laws discriminating against them and with carefully prepared sophisticated arguments sought redress against injustice in the courts All to little avail Yet the Issei held out hope for their Nisei children and that hope in the end was legitimate and justified The Issei sheds light onshameful chapter in our history bookshow the systematic repression of earlyapanese immigrants prepared the way for World War II internment camps At the same time it illuminates the courage and spirit of these immigrants sharing the inspiring story of how they managed to overcome discrimination to build successful lives for their children as American citizens Ichioka isresearch associate with the Asian-American
