This morning ye local strolled down to tho Walker House, and in company with its affable proprietor, Mr. Greeley, mode quite a lengthy tour of inspection through its spacious halls and tasty The honso is rapidly apapartments. and will be proaching completion, for about the first of ready occupancy next month. A number of rooms are already occupied, and the proprietor proposes to have tho house fully equip-I- d and furnished, and get the entire machinery running smoothly, when he will open out with a grand reception. The house throughout is furnished with elegant, substantial furniture of latest patterns and the suites for the public, parlors are perfectly superb. The house is admirably divided off into apart ments. Resides the single and double rooms suitable for transient custom, there nre snites of roomi so appropriately fitted for families that we yearnedjfor our lost rib that we might secure a suite at once. The principal rooms are furnished with hot and cold water and a number of them with private shower baths. In the furnishing of thejhousc all of the latest improvements have been secured. The culinary department is old perfection itself, being supplied with a coin plcte apparatus which will at once save labor and enable the meals to lie served with lightning dispatch. There ii also a novel arrangement connected with it which is supplied with steam, and will keep the meals warm for hours. The rooms are well planned, there being a regular circuit for the servants so that those returning from the dining room will not interfere with those going out. Tho knives, forks, spoons, etc., arc of the best quality, and nil bear the beautiful monogram of the house. The laundry is the finest we have seen, containing a steam washing machine that will wash and wring 300 pieces in thirty minutes, and haring a drying room and all the other necessaries for that dc;tartment. There is an enwhich supplies the water gine and steam ' for the cooking, the laundry, the baths, etc, and which keep tho three large tanks in the top of the house supplied with water. Pipes from these tanks lead to every hall, and have a hose attached to each, ao that ia case of fire the whole building would be deluged in a few minutes. There is also a novel construction which serves as an extra precaution ngaisst fire. It consists of a tube, half filled with mercury, which is placed in each room. In the upper part of these tubes are electrified wires and nil of these wires lend to the office. Should a fire occur in any room the heat wonkl cause the mereuiy to rise, nnd so soon as it touched the little wire in the upper part of the tube, the fire alarm bell would be rang in the office. With these precautions there is no danger of fire ever destroying the Walker House.
