Whatever may be the merits or contentions of any group, we as Democrats should be able to agree that the obligations of the party should not be directed to selfish interests of any group. Its obligation is primarily to the people it is permitted to serve. With this thought in mind, and at the suggestion of many Democrats, I have come to the conclusion that I may be able to perform a service for the party and the great majority of the common people whom it represents. It has been pointed out that as a candidate for the state senate I had the indorsement of leading groups within the party, and since my election to the senate I have endeavored to fairly consider the views of all groups or persons within the party.
