Show 7 UTAH LABOR NEWS, SALT LAKE CITY. UTAH. MAY 24. 1935 COAL MINERS CONDEMN CHEAP LABOR POLICIES OF D. & R. G. W. R. R. The United Mine Workers of District No. 22, Utah Division, at its last executive meeting held in Price, adopted a resolution which reads as follows: We, the Central Executive body, representing all local unions oi District No. 22, United Mine Workers of America, in the Utah division, do hereby most emphatically protest methods pursued by the Denver & Rio Grande Western Railroad, and the Utah Railway in emigrating cheap labor from neighboring states; and we do also protest methods used by the Carbon county relief administration in conjunction with U. S. Reemployment Service in forcing men to work 10 hours per day at the rate of 20 cents per hour, in violation of the state labor laws, as well as the code of the National Recovery act. These methods are bearing directly against American standards of living and directly contrary to the NRA. The members of the resolutions committee Vere: G. G. Lindstrom, Alfred Carrey, Peter Borla, Adam Ostorch, and Ernest Nixon. Secretary Orvel Peterson of the executive committee, in writing to the Utah Labor News, says that copies of the resolutions were sent to Governor Blood, to the Industrial Commission of Utah, Secretary of Labor Frances Perkins, Carbon county commissioners, and others who may be able to act upon the matter. It is reported that D. & R. G. W. railroad has received money from the FERA and this money is being used to pay wages for the cheap labor they employ. This railroad company also de mands that thp employees stay at their boarding house and furnish their own bedding. It is said that the company has applied for men that are Mexicans, through the Threkeld Commissary company. It is said that the Industrial Commission is now working on the case. IT TAKES AN IDEA w By JOHN EDWIN PRICE Y law-maki- ng 5-- con-lP1- Jim Crow was thirsty. He came across a pitcher which contained some water. He couldnt reach it He concentrated a minute. His concentration tuned his thinker in with the idea wave length. He gathered a lot of stones. One by one he dropped them in to the pitcher. Soon the water was where he could Teach it. There wasnt any more water but an idea made what there was available. So Mr. Aesop long ago impressed the world with the enlarging, activating power of an idea. Benjamin Franklin discovered electricity. Thomas Edison and others tuned in ideas which made it available in countless ways. The principles of radio were known back in 1846. However, millions of people did not enjoy the masters of music, knowledge and speech at their own firesides until many inventors tuned in ideas which made the principles of radio available to the least and lowest. There is plenty of food and raw material to provide clothing anc shelter and luxuries and playtime and travel for everyone on earth. Many men in many lands are en deavoring to tune in on the right idea wave length to make them available. The will to serve and the will to share never were so much in evidence in the world as today. Let a few more thousands determine that wealth is to serve man-cin- d instead of having mankind serve it. Let a few more millions be willing to give their best in a days work and the air will be cleared of much of the static which makes it difficult for the master minds of it. In substituting something to take its place and by trying again and again after repeated failures we can get that feeling of Mastery wave the idea our day to tune in all the world is craving. that available make which will length that abundance of goodwill which will bring the Reign of Right into visible expression.
