S. (Continued from last week) Roosevelt and Recovery The theme song of the Republican national convention at Cleveland last month was three long years. Against the 3 years of the Roosevelt administration, which they derided and condemned in song and speech and platform, we want to match the 4 longer years through which the country suffered when Herbert Hoover, the man to whom that convention accorded the most applause and greatest ovation, was Compiled From Reports of Observers On Opponents Can Agree at least one point opponents of the Roosevelt administration are in agreement with its princiWhen James A. pal strategist. Farley opened the campaign for the Democrats at Philadelphia he said that there was but one big issue at stake the New Deal. Mr. Farley is unquestionably right-anhe might have gone a step farther and said that the issue is President Roosevelt. Mr. Rcose velt is the New Deal and his personality, his opinions and his record are infinitely more important in this campaign than is the Democratic platform or the speeches of Real Voters Smell Dead Rat The biggest joke of the season is the American Institute of Public Opinion(?) and its faked national polls on the 1936 presidential campaign. Anybody with common sense will admit this fact. You have read in the Republican daily newspapers about the results of these purported national polls. But have you ever seen a ballot or cast a vote in these faked polls? No, you have not! Nor have any other actual voters! Investigations indicate that these polls are conducted by swivel chair dopesters in the offices of Republican newspapers. The whole Institute poll has the skunk-lik- e odor of the American Liberty League. The interests who desire to return to the days of "rugged individualism" have employed the highest paid writers and jugglers of figures to carry on a campaign of humbug in the columns of big business daily newspapers in their frantic to "stop Roosevelt" and elect a president who would listen to "his masters voice." In this campaign the American Institute of Public Opin-ion(?- ) is supposedly the vehicle that will deliver the goods to the du Ponts, Morgans and other Wall Street interests. But the published results of the Institute polls are so bold and so raw that even a child can readily distinguish that they are nothing but concocted humbug. The authors of the faked poll, no doubt, will wake up on the morning after election day in November, 1936, and learn that Lincoln was right when he said, "You can fool all of the president. Ordinarily, national political conventions, either in speech or resolution, point with pride to the record and achievements of the last ad ministration when their party was in power, and contrast it with the failures and foibles of the administration which they are seeking to supplant. But the Republicans at Cleveland last month forgot to do this Upon that subject the plat vention with their ablest leaders form was silent.
