Show UTAH LABOR NEWS, SALT LAKE CITY, UTAH, MAY 3, 1935. :& PRES. ROOSEVELT (Continued from page 1) spent and not held over until later years. v In all cases projects must be of a character to give employment to those on relief rolls. Projects must be allocated to localities or relief areas in relation to the number of workers on relief rolls in those areas. Losing No Time President Roosevelt explained the machinery he has set up to carry on the work. He said that he expected the division of applications and information to sift the applications, thence they would go to the allotment division for a further sifting, and allocation of the money. The proper government agencies would be notified to su pervise or carry out the work and the progress division, which would keep a close watch on the purchasing, employment, wage, and finally, the shifting of the workers back into private employment as rapidly as possible. We are losing no time in get ting the governments vast work relief prpgram under way and we have every reason to believe that it will be in full swing by autumn, the President said. About Chiselers There are chiselers in every walk of life, Roosevelt added. There are those in every industry who are guilty of unfair practices, every profession has its black sheep, but long experience in government has taught me that the exceptional instances of wrong doing. in government are possibly less numerous than in almost any other line of endeavor. The most effective manner of preventing such evils in this work relief program will be the eternal vigilance of the American people themselves. In putting economical security at the top of the list, the President said that while many millions more persons are employed in private industry now than two years ago, experience has taught that certain remedial measures are necessary. He said that he was for the New Deal, because it means freeing the many from the regimentation of the few. It was because of these campaign pledges and declarations that the people of Utah rallied to the polls last November and reelected Senator King. Where Is He Where is Senator King today? Has Senator King forgotten those solemn pledges and vows that he made to the people of Utah during his campaign in 193-4Judging from the news we gather, coming from Washington, D. C., the senior senator of Utah is not living up to his promises. His activities in the senate are positive evidence that he is taking his orders from the lobbyists and spokesmen for" the chambers of ? interests. benefits and to the detriment of the people in general. They forget that there are people in Utah besides those represented by the chambers of commerce. ' (u - Li ' The people of Utah are thinking, and they are thinking hard and seriously. The association points out that there is an annual loss of tons of coal production al- ready being suffered by the industry, representing over $7,000,000 in wages annually, and over $8,000,-00- 0 in freight revenue, half of which goes direct to labor. An effort was made in the Utah State legislature to pass a natural gas tax in the 21st session. The house passed H. B. 16, which provided for a 4 cent tax on 1,000 cubic feet of natural gas, but the bill ran onto a snag in the senate sifting committee, where it was starved to death by friends of spe- rial interests. the well-bein- SPECIAL RECEPTION ROOMS FOR UTAHNS IB' IT TH |
