He knows the problems of the working man, since from hi3 childhood he has had to work. His scientific work has been devoted to the betterment of the lot of those who toil. His educational activities have been with the children of the common people. He knows their problems and he has helped thousands of these young people to prepare themselves to meet the uncertainties of the modem world. He has studied the conditions of the working man in all parts of the world, particularly in Russia, Germany. Italy, Spain, and Mexico where new methods are being tried. He knows something of the strong as wrell as the weak points in labor relations in all of these countries. He is a believer in a high standard of living with adequate education and suitable living conditions for the working man. He believes that these good things may best be obtained on the principle of live and let live. He believes in the cooperation of labor and industry and that the permanent security of the working man can be had only by such cooperation as will be beneficial to both interests. He speaks the language of the common people, and he is now anxious to serve them in this new capacity. Organized labor is raising the standards of the workers by the education of its members in special meetings and lecture courses, and in supplying special courses of study. The educational' work being done for the preparation of intelligent and informed leadership is particularly important, because organized labor is being confronted by highly paid specialists, representing Industry in the making of agreements which affect the wellbeing of many thousands of j workers. Organized labor is raising the standards of the workers by lifting the immigrant to higher levels. No organization has done more in this direction duringvthe past generation than the trade union. It has been done not merely through ordinary educational processes, but by the examples set by American workers who have been accustomed to standards expected of workers 1 in our Democracy. 3 Organized labor is on the alert to elevate, in every way possible, the general welfare of those who are bearing the burden of the worlds work. Its task has just begun. There remains yet much to be accomplished, but unquestionably it will rapidly eliminate such features as stand in the way of its highest development, and push aggressively for the standards which should be attained by every honest toiler. When you hear some folks you know blow and brag, you are reminded of the time when the flea said to the elephant, Boy, didnt we shake that bridge when we crossed it. Labor Day Greetings D. D.
