The division in labors' ranks has played into the hands of the old-lin- e politicians and has delivered the people to their enemies. This loss of political power and influence reflected itself particularly in the actions of the last Congress. We would not now have the pallid wage and hour bill that was finally passed. ,We would have a real wage and hour law instead of one that presumes to say that $11 a week is sufficient wage for a workers labor. We remember that in the very first year of the New Deal the Senate had passed a law limiting the hours to thirty a week. Five years later a measure is finally forced through under great pressure, granting as many as forty-foa week, and even this law is so full of exceptions and special dispensations as to be almost meaningless. Is it not reasonable to assume that if labor had been united a much better wage and hour law would have been passed by this time ? One of the most important bills for labor at the last session of Congress was an amendment to the Walsh-Heal- y Act. This amendment had two aims in view. One of them was to forbid the government to issue contracts to such firms as violate the Federal labor laws, and to take them out of the bidding for government orders for a jeriod of three years. They called ly his provision a blacklist, a most dreadful name. And yet, is there any sensible reason vhy the government should patron-z- e a firm that refuses to obey the aw and abide by the governments I Booths For Ladies YOUR FRIENDS LABOR DAY GREETINGS 132 TO UTAH LABOR Peace Plan Wasatch 4919 LABOR DAY GREETINGS RULON F. I suspect were the Federal departments helpful to these manufacturers in such a situation, and the amendment reducing the amount to $2000 would have helped stop such collusion. However, the amendment was defeated. It was buried in committee in the final days of the last Congress, despite its supreme importance to labor.
