UTAH LABOR NEWS.- HISTORIC MOMENTS By KATE RICHARDS (Continued from Page 1) the great orby ators who once flourished on Capitol Ilill. I dreamed of these masters of diction, and wept that I had been bom too late to sit at their feet. Possibly the great American breed of orators has run out. At any rate there are none hero-worshippi- ng here now. I heard Norris make one speech in the senate that was a masterpiece, and Pepper of Florida shows real promise and thats that for the senate. In the house, Amlie is scholarly, Voorhis is a flaming evangelist, Maverick will be an orator if he ever tones down, Wood-rupurrs beautifully, Rayburn is master of the tremolo stops, and Fish would he an orator if he ever had anything to say. Hut on the whole it has been one dreary flood of flapdoodle, muddled thinking, m and hashed diction. Watched the Show I have sat in the galleries and watched the show put on for the uninitiated and cocked a willing ear to the grapevine gossip that n on the carries the real been of drah, Its congress. doings dreary, and tiresome, but history in the making. From the day that Thomas Jefferson, slightly are born said wTe free and equal, down to this session of congress, the political dividing lines between people have been North and South, high tar-;- if and free trade, Democrat and Republican, and there have always been progressives and conservalow-dow- over-enthusiast- ic, 4 tives in every group. For years we have worked and striven, hoped and prayed for the day when the dividing line would put all of the reactionaries in one camp and all the progressives in another, when the issues would be clearly drawn between- property rights and human rights, between those who produce and those who take, those who serve humanity - LABOR For Your Candies See EDEN CANDY, Inc. 59 E. 3rd South - (Continued from page 1) Hearing Mr. Lewis and then reading the report in the papers should give you a fair inkling of I.-- l. Ilasic Realignments The mills of the gods grind and generations of Americans with social vision have beaten their wings against the stone walls of prejudice and tradition, and gone but they grind exfine and out of the ceeding welter and chaos of this dreary session have come realistic, basic political realignments. Political lines are clearly drawn along basic issues for the first time. Lined up in a solid block of opposition to the New Deal, its program and its policies, are the remnants of the Republican party and all the bourbon Democrats. As definitely aligned, although a bit dazed by the swift pace of developments, are the Progressives, the Farmer-Laborite- s, and the liberal Democrats, all supporting the New Deal. The New Dealers have leadslow is Roosevelt chala and rock, standing lenges the force of reaction to President- - like battle on every occasion. Look for New Deal There is no question that the new political alignments are here, and that the Democratic Party is split beyond repair. Never again can a reactionary Democrat ride into office on the Rooseveltlan coat-tailand never again will genuine New Deal Democrats find themselves the political bedfellows s, of bourbons. Now that the sheep have been sorted from the goats, now that each member of congress is branded with a true label, politics are going to he slightly more sane, decent, and logical. In the reactionary camp, openly aligned with the policy of the prior rights of property over human life, sailing under true colors, a stalwart Republican or a bourbon Democrat is a decent sort of gentleman whom one can respect. Now that I know where to place him, sure that never again can he give the kiss of death to New Deal policies, I can enjoy Woodrums dulcet voice and pulchritude. Knowing that at least he is harmoniously placed with the reactionary southern Democrats, I can admire Tinkhams luxuriant whiskers, and hope that resent true that a political party which seeks the support of labor and makes pledges of good faith to labor must, in equity and good conscience, keep that faith apd redeem those pledges. He did say: The spectahle of august and dignified members of congress, sonants of the people and agents of the republic skulking in hallways and closets, hiding their faces in a party caucus to prevent a quorum from acting upon a labor measure, is one that emphasizes the perfidy of politicians and blasts the confidence of labors millions in politicians promises and statesmens vows. He said they equip vigilantes with tin hats, wooden clubs, gas masks and lethal weapons and train them in the arts of brutality and oppression. Snoops and Finks They bring in snoops, finks, hatchet gangs and Chowderhead Cohens to infest their plants and disturb the communities. Fascist organizations have been launched and financed under the shabby pre-tethat the C. I. O. movement is xt will gain control of the party and make it really progressive, or whether the bourbons will hold on to the shell while the liberals build a new party is not a matter of moment right now. Time and developments will solve the problem; we can cross that bridge when we reach it. It is enough for me at the moment to know that the days of subterfuge, camouflage, trickery, and lies are gone. Conservatives are conservatives, progressives are progressives. We will wear our own labels, fight it out on honest issues, and may the best gang win. I have watched history being made, and shared one of the most profoundly dramatic events of our national life. But the birth of May the Best Win this new era was no twilight sleep. Deal Democrats I am battered and New Whether v sore, hot, weary, and homesick.
