When my children were young there was a large, flat-to- p post at the front gate which was their favorite roosting place. Many were the hot skirmishes for the coveted seat, and possession was always nine points of the law. One day 1 heard a great rumpus and dashed out, sure that something dreadful had happened. My daughter, a much spoiled lassie because she was an only girl with three brothers, was perched on top of the gate post, yelling like a Comanche Indian. Much fright- ened by the racket, I asked what she was screaming about. Clinging and the news is not so good. Burton to investigate the Association of Leagues, vigilante coalition which includes officials of Republic Steel corporation, nazi agents and American fascist groups like the Silver legion and the Student Ameri-caneer- s. The American League Against War and Fascism, together with the Cleveland Industrial Council, the Womens International League for leace and Freedom and other civic and trade union groups, has been applying pressure on the city government to investigate the association since The Cleveland Press exposed it in a series of articles. The Press broke the story with the of the American cooperation League Against War and Fascism, which had conducted a private investigation of the organization. The American League called a mass meeting on the question of local vigilantism. In issuing the call to the mass meeting, the Cleveland committee of the League cited the need for united action by all trade union groups against vigilantism; the great need at the present time to defend the National Labor Relations Act and civil rights in general. It seems rather childish. The congressmen are having their vacation except those that are working hard laying lines for reelection. Many of the congressmen will find at home indignant folks because of their failure to support important New Deal legislation. Business, whatever that is, wanted congress out of the way because congress meant uncertainty. The biggest uncertainty the country ever knew came along about 1933 when there was no congress in session. There was a good deal of clamoring for congress to meet so something could be done. Business likes laissez faire, until laizzes faire runs things so badly haywire that just going along as you please doesnt work any more and then business sings another tune. Very interesting and thats about all you can say for it. This congress did some worth-whil- e things while it left undone the most important worth-whil- e things its members promised to do during the last campaign. Congress failed to do the important things and business is glad congress is out of the way. Out of whose way? Congress left as unfinished business the wage and hour legislation, farm legislation, and other important legislation, most of them in the direction of helping the lot of the masses (Continued on page 4) Labor on Its Forward March; C.
