FANNIE M. COHN, Secretary, Educational Department International Ladies Garment Workers, a C. I. 0. Affiliate. Hy be factual where it deab with labor and social problems, but it should at the same time inspire the workers with confidence in their own collective abilities.. Workers education is based on confidence in the masses and on the assumption that human nature is not static. Given the opportunity, the proper atmosphere, and an inspiring environment, human nature can be influenced. It is also guided by the theory of modern psychology that creative-imaginatio- and n in- itiative can be developed in varying degrees. But the workers must be made conscious of the historic forces that are now jn process. The masses, guided by dynamic and imaginative leadership, must be prepared to steel these forces in the direction of economic and social change based on equality upon which real democracy depends. Young and Old Workers education is important both for younger and older workers. The younger workers need it in order to develop a new orientation as workers and citizens. The older workers need it because, by keeping their minds open and receptive, they may make the best use of their experience. They will then be a valuable asset to the labor movement. Finally, the leaders of the workers education movement should not lose sight of the fact that the problem is not merely to impart information but how to use the newly-gaine- knowledge d intelli- gently and effectively. LABOR ON ITS FORWARD MARCH (Continued from page 6) dished out by those who are in favor of the A. F. of L. just so long as the A. F. of L. does not organize the millions of unorganized workers in this country. They know full well that the A. F. of L. did not and as long as it followed its traditional policy could not organize the millions of unorganizea workers. There are few who are permitted to write editorials for daily newspapers and important magazines who do not know that the A. F. of L. has never been a united body except on matters of labor legislation and public policy. Each international union has been a law unto itself and still is. Each international union is still such a law unto itself that the A. F. of L. can not issue a charter to any new international union unless all other international unions now in the A. F. of L. waive as to jurisdiction over the class of work in question. Prattle 'about jurisdiction prevented organization of the autc workers, steel workers, rubbei workers and radio workers. A number of international unions assisted the above named workers (then affiliated with the A. F. of L. internationals. But the specialists in jurisdiction were in the majority and they bounced the aiding internationals, as well as those unions seeking to organize the mass production workers, out of the A. F. of L. So far so good for the A. F. of L. (or it should be, it had its own But President way. about it). Green says no. He is constantly nagging and criticizing the Committee for Industrial Organization, of the international composed unions which Mr. Green helped bounce out of the A. F. of L. When the auto workers were organized Mr. Green didnt think it was so hot. When the steel workers were organized he criticized them for Best Wishes to Smelter Workers Convention Fred Carlson & Co. I. 0. strike-tor- n communities help the strikers, Mr. Green apologizes by saying in such instances workers are bound to help each other a bit and that the helpers will not be punished. Mr. Green keeps prating about a dual organization but it is dual only to the degree that Mr. Green amputated a portion of the A. F. of L. and then cries about the folly of his own act. The C. I. 0. is happy to see the workers organized in the A. F. of L as well as the C. I. 0. It wants is only furnishing ammunition to such as Girdler, the boss of the independent steel group, who refuse to sign any kind of an agreement with a labor dent-Gree- union. The plain fact of the matter is that President Green and his executive council set out to be the directors of both organized and unorganized workers in this country and they have failed quite the workers organized. The C. I. 0. does not criticize the A. F. of L. but the A. F. of L. executive council is busy fulminating and criticizing and it now wants to double the per canita tax to fight the C. I. 0. Why should the A. F. of L. want to fight workers trying to organize and bargain collectively in bona fide labor unions? Why is it not better policy for the A. F. of L. executive council to desire to fight the automobile manufacturers, the steel manufacturers, the textile manufacturers, and other manufacturers who refuse to bargain collectively either with the A. F. of L. or the C. I. 0.?
