Democrats Yom Are Welcome POLITICAL OUTLOOK (Continued from page 1) ors counsellors are anti-nedealers and nearly all the high offices have been filled by them must be considered and the effect that this has on government, and especially the Social Security Act, since it is characteristically new deal. One of the greatest criticisms of the present state administration is that not only those administering the Social Security Act, but so many others in official positions are Republicans. The time has come when the man and woman who works in the party should administer the offices and principles of the party. One test'that should be applied in determining who is to fill a position of authority is the ouestion Do you support the new deal? he stated. Social Security On the matter of old age pensions he declared that the legislature pave the governor the power to act, and that the members had no idea that the pensions law was to become a paupers' law. He took his stand 100 per cent on the law as passed in congress, which is to be administered without investigation or liens. He said that he believes that Utah pioneers, more than those in some other states are entitled to pensions because they labored and endured not so much for personal gain as w for general good. Senator Maw said that he was for a speedy enactment of the unemployment insurance act to give the workers of Utah the full benefit of the national legislation. Concerning the liquor law, he said that one fundamental princi- ple should be no discrimination, that the law should be amended so that anyone who observes the law can sell beer. Tat Laws He believes that tax laws and their administration should be such that utilities will be taxed on the same basis as other property in the state. He is ready to take up the fight against those who harness water power and take control of other natural resources and bleed the people. The people cannot win by a passive attitude, they must work, because millions are being spent to defeat Roosevelt and progressive measures it will take the courageous fighting of all Democrats in united efforts, he said. It is his belief that the state should do all in its power to help businesses that make and spend their money in Utah and hire Utah labor, that the state must help the poor to fight against poverty. He also declared his belief in soil conservation as it is being done, that the road commission should be brought under control and made to tell what is being done, and that we must have a direct Peery on Social Security Modifications in the social security act to make assistance available for a greater number of people, was announced by Mayor Harman W. Peery as 'one of the major proposals he will include in his independent campaign for the office of governor this year. Since the approval of the present provisions in Washington and the beginning of operation of the state law, there has been much dissatisfaction aroused among the people it is supposed to benefit, he said. Certainly the provision de- - SURE, YOUR CREDIT IS GOOD! On Goodrich Tires Silver-tow- n manding mortgages on the homes of old people for every cent of assistance they get should be modified. This feature bars from benefits many of our good substantial citizens for the benefit of the transients and others who never paid anything into the state and local treasuries through property taxes, he said. Though not advocating a special session of the legislature to treat the injustices of the act, Mayor Peery said that at the next regular meeting it is imperative that the act be modified to permit more people to benefit through its pro visions. More money can thus be received by Utah from the federal government, he pointed out. The act was designed to benefit the old people and the dependent and the physically handicapped, and yet it seems that those who drafted the measure considered the needs of the big money interests a great deal more than the needs of the socially insecure, he assertThis state certainly has ed. enough resources to insure these people a decent living without forcing them to pay for it out of any property they may have saved through thrift and honest labor.
