Show ALAS! POOR BRUIN. Hyrum Ricks, one of our well known merchants, went up Logan canyon in search of sport. This morning, when roaming alone near the forks, about 20 miles up the canyon, he espied a dark object moving on the side of the mountain. He fired his rifle, the animal making tracks for a neighboring thicket. The hunter, nothing daunted, followed, and when within about one and a half rods off, saw that he had wounded a bear, which growled and showed considerable anger. He again fired his rifle, this time knocking off the bear's nose, this threw bruin into a rage and he rapidly advanced upon his assailant, the conflict was however soon settled by a well directed shot in the animals brain when only a yard or two of ground intervened between the hunter and his prey. The victor may be thankful that be possessed a good nerve and a trusty mule, otherwise he would likely have found himself the hunted instead of the hunter. The carcass was brought into Logan yesterday afternoon and a number of friends feasted upon the meat, which not only looked ?? but our experience at this morning's breakfast, was that it was quite a treat. Bears come down the mountain at this season of the year, to regale on the ripe berries and all persons traveling in the canyons, should be prepared for emergencies. |
