Show The Paper That Dares To Take A Stand Page 12, The Utah Independent, November 29, 1973 Energy "Crisis Is Contrived - Belmont, Massachusetts Energy shortage? be must Someone kidding! The United States Geological Survey reports that, even at current rates of consumption, America possesses a 500-yea- r supply of petro300-yeleum and a supply of natural gas ar within our own territory. Geologists also estimate that there are two trillion barrels of high grade oil in the shale rock of Colorado, Utah and Wyoming. This fantastic source of energy is six times larger than all known reserves of crude petroleum on earth. Someone is trying to kid us. It is patently contrived nonsense to suggest that we cannot meet our energy needs. Government interference, however, is preventing exploitation of these abundant natural resources. Most of the interference is directly traceable to the National Environmental Policy Act of 1969, which was sponsored by Senators Jackson and Muskie and signed into law by President Nixon. That Act has already been used to virtually e oil production. It has been used halt as justification for the present restrictions on obtaining the oil from shale rock in the Rocky Mountain states. And it is that piece of federal off-shor- legislation that has kept Alaskan oil from reaching mainland consumers. Two million barrels of oil per day could have been flowing from the Alaskan wilderness by now, but for incredible interference with the pipeline. Even before the scheduled start of construction, the oil companies financed extensive ecological research along the proposed route of the pipeline. Teams of scientists were employed to study all possible effects upon wildlife, vegetation and waterways along the 800 miles of Alaskan wilderness. Plans were even drawn to elevate the pipeline where necessary and to cater in every way to ecological considerations. Construction plans included mobilizing a trans-Alaska- n Continued from page w 4r. force of 10,000 men and a total budget in excess of $1 billion. By the end of 1969, a mountain of pipe and fleets of bulldozers, trucks and other heavy machinery had been assembled, and the companies were eager to tackle the largest single construction project ever attempted by private industry. The project included the building of a modern port facility at Valdes for the huge tankers needed to transport the oil. Completion of the entire operation was scheduled for the end of 1972. .But the project has been stopped cold for almost four years. environfnentalists, wielding clubs provided for them by the National Environmental Policy Act of 1969 and other legislation, have bottled up the Alaskan project and similar projects as well. Americans would normally label this situation stupidity, but in reality it amounts to deliberate destruction. The key to understanding the full impact of the present energy crisis can be found in President Nixons recent proposals for alleviating the problem. Mixed in with an occasional reference to the root cause of the shortage, you will find a huge assortment of additional controls and new powers for the federal government. That such an outcome was fully intended by ecology fanatics and a reluctant government should not be overlooked. There is a lesson here that should have been learned from the wage and price control fiasco: Government controls have never produced anything but government power. New controls proposed by Mr. Nixon wont produce one drop of oil. A reduction in the size, power, and influence of government will solve the problem. Unshackled, the free enterprise system can end the energy crisis and all other crises brought on by the awesome power of too much govern- IaLTjo I TEARS MATR 0 FLEET HAS HOW PtfcuOKP TO Ataur V ST'4'1, 3URFACE 5HIM and TMI AMERICA 1$ TUI UNCMALLENGAP Tu 0-fJMftAT DECLINING v Ae OU Of TUI SUlW USEFUL L.FE EjtrECTANCV MOe thaw SO'.
