Show The Paper That Dares To Take A Stand November organize and consolidate conservatives who politically believe that the constitution of the U.S. should be preserved and adhered to. The following questions were brought up: 1. Should conservatives gravitate or lend their total support to one political party? If so, which party. The American Party, the Libertarian Party, the Democratic Party, or the Republican Party? There were advocates of each in attendance. 2. Party, or the Republican Party? There were advocates of of each in attendance. 3. Should a new political party be organized? 4. Should a organization be formed that would educate and support candidates in any party that had the correct principles? 5. Should our hopes be based on like the posse organizations comitatus who would bring errant public officials before the board of non-partis- an justice? ' conservatives could not be into one party, consolidated it although was demonstrated that the majority in attendance preferred the American Party. It was at this point that the difference of opinions became manifest. It was finally decided that a committee be selected that would design an educational organization that 1. would, encourage ' conservative constitutionalists to run for public office; 2. endorse and support them when they do; and 3. educate those that are uninformed. A committee was selected and all inquiries and suggestions should be directed to them. Those selected were; Larry Wilcox, Jefferson LeCates, Dale Stokes, Joe Fergeson, Karl Bray, Tom Hoopes, John Grismore, H. B. Thompson, and David Yeaman. Even though the Commission did not call for full legalization, its permissive recommendations were widely publicized and gratefully endorsed by pot promoters. The drive for easy marijuana continues today. Fueled by clever propaganda and widespread flouting of the law, the pressure for legalization of grass has only grown stronger. But the consequences of marijuana usage are so serious that no nation in the history of the world has ever legitimized its use. A recent development in the marijuana controversy may hopefully be a signal that a trend toward a healthier respect for this dangerous substance is beginning. It reinforces our conviction that marijuana is harmful and should never be legalized. In 1967, Dr. D. Harvey Powelson, chief psychiatrist at the University of California at Berkeley, stated his belief that there were no long-terharmful effects from marijuana and that it should probably be legalized. Since then, Dr. Powelson has come full circle and now agrees that marijuana is dangerous and should be avoided. His new position is based on personal observation of hundreds of students at the Berkeley campus. Dr. Powelsons first doubts about marijauana developed when he detected a mushy thinking process in an extremely bright student whom he had come to know. On one occasion, when his attempts to follow the young mans conversation became exceptionally difficult, the doctor learned that his young friend had smoked particularly good grass two nights earlier. Dr. Powelsons concern increased as he observed a growing paranoia and a constant Belmont, Massachusetts It was obvious that strong willed Utah Independent Page 11 1973 Marijuana Trend Changing? Newman - Owner noted the heightened tendency of users to fool themselves insisting that they were more aware and had greater insight than ever before. According to the doctor, a typical marijuana user talked glibly, using cliches, theories and insights, all to avoid noticing concretely and immediately whatever he was really doing Dr. Powelsons report included his observations of those who had abandoned the use of marijuana as much as six months before he met them. Describing the attempts of former users to return to studies, he likened their inability to think clearly to wandering in a swamp which has islands of solidity and sudden holes with no markings for either the island or the bog. In short, he found that their ability to concentrate had been destroyed. After five years of extensive clinical experience, he now believes that the use of marijuana leads to a disorder of the thinking process; that the effects of marijuana are cumulative; and that, after six months of daily use, chronic changes occur which are similar to those seen in organic brain damage. We admire Dr. Powelsons willingness to admit his error. And we hope that his new findings can be shown to youngsters and parents across the country. Marijuana users are marijuana promoters. Once started in a community, the use of pot can spread like smallpox. Most of the young people who fool around with grass have no appreciation of the damage they may be doing to themselves. But others do know of marithat is why they juanas harmful effects promote it. There are sinister forces presently at work in our country to gain increasing respectability for pot as a tool to further weaken this nation. That these forces should include a Presidential Commission is a clear indication of how serious the marijuana problem is. AND THAT IS TO HIDE IT.
