The figures, contained in a just released FBI annual crime report, reflect a steady rise in fatal attacks against officers of the law. Most of the policemen were slain while attempting arrests. A number were killed chasing robbery suspects and others died responding to disturbance calls, during civil disorders, at traffic stops or while investigating suspicious people and circumstances. The FBI report revealed that 100 police officers were killed in 1970, a 1 6 percent increase over 1969 when 86 officers were slain in line of duty. Examination of circumstances under which police officers were murdered in 1970, the report stated, discloses a most urgent need for officers to be more alert than ever before in connection with all their duties regardless of how routine these duties have been in the past. The report said no arrest situation can be considered routine as evidenced by the fact that from 1961 to 1970 more officers were killed attempting arrests than in any other manner. of the police murders in 1970 were perpetrated Ninety-thre- e and five of these mostly handguns through use of firearms were killed when their own guns were used against them; two were bombed to death and three died of knife wounds.
