It should be noted that Dr. Quigley asserts here that he has been dose to the instruments of this Establishment for most of his life, that he has studied its operations for twenty years and that for two years he had access to its secret records. Writing as an insider his story should be fairly credible. He frankly admits that he is in sympathy with the basic aims ( Hope the American people like it or not,' they find themselves at the cross-road- s of their national life. DR. CARROLL QUIGLEY OF HARVARD, AND GEORGETOWN PRINCETON UNIVERSITIES ?he historian and scholar to whom we are indebted By Ogden Kraut Part II . It was a beautiful spring day in 17 64; but inside the Virginia . . House of Burgesses, debate was hot and heavy. British taxation on the American colonies was fuel for the fire, and the meeting1 reached its zenith when Patrick Henrys speech ended with, If this be treason, make the most of it. Thomas Jefferson listened intently to llenry, for they were good friends and as youths had attended school together. Jefferson considered Patrick asa rather rough, uncouth character, but today his words were splendid.. It was the first shot of patriotic inspiration to course through Jefferson s veins and it thrilled his soul. From this moment on he would also carry, that banner and become one of the immortal champions of Continued on page 9 for many details concerning the origin and developEstablishment is Dr. Carroll ment of the super-ric- h Quigley who wrote the college textbook Evolution of Civilizations and serves on the editorial board of the monthly publication Current History. Dr. Quigley presently serves as professor of history at the Foreign Service School of Georgetown University and has previously taught at Harvard and Princeton. In 1966 Dr. Quigley published a new' college textbook entitled Hope and Tragedy , in which he opened a Pandoras .box of trouble for the rich revolutionaries by letting their closely guarded secret out of the bag. Just why Dr. Quigley considered this desirable is clearly stated in his book. He simply felt that the existence of this group should .no longer remain a secret. Says he: There does exist, and has existed for a generation, an international Anglophile network which operates, to some extent, in the way the radical Right believes the Communists act. In fact, this network, which we may identify as the Round Table Groups, has no aversion to cooperating with the Communists, or any other groups, and frequently does so. I know of the operation of this network because I have studied it for twenty years and was permitted for two years, in the early 1960 s, to examine its papers and secret records. I have no aversion to it or to most of its aims and have , for much of my life , been close to it and to many of its instruments. I have objected, both in the past and recently to a few of its policies . . . but in general my chief difference of opinion is that it wishes to remain unknown, and I believe its role in history is significant enough to be known. of this Establishment and his most serious objection to its policies is the fact that it wishes to remain secret. He, however, feels it is historically desirable to let people know who is running things. It will probably turn out that the policy of secrecy was a better strategy. What Dr; Quigley reveals in detail concerning the origin and aspirations of this wealthy power bloc is undoubtedly going to produce an explosive indignation among traditional Americans. And if enough of them became aroused and . took the necessary political action, this powerful cadre of rich revolutionaries could be legislated right out of existence. But we shall have more to say about that later. At this point we must examine what Dr. Quigley says about the origin and tactics of this global Establishment. THE WEALTHY "SECRET SOCIETY" ORIGINATED You will notice IN ENGLAND that Dr. Quigley refers to the Establishment as an anglophile network. This means that the network is British-orienteIn fact, it originated in England. However, you will note that he says it has been functioning in the United States for a full generation. When he gives us the details, it turns out to be more than half a century. Commencing on page 130, Dr. Quigley states that the idea of a world-wid- e socialist government was first planted in the minds of rich young British aristocrats at Oxford.
