James McClure (R-Id- a) Residents in the west have a very special relationship with the public lands. Often those lands surround us and provide many Idahoans with their livelihood as well as their recreation. The special tie between those of us who live in the west and our public land is not understood by those in the east. That lack of understanding is unfortunate for us, because ever increasingly the decisions on the management of public lands are made in the marble halls of Washington, DC. The proposed curtailment of recreational vehicle use on public lands is just the most recent example of that eastern establishment Whether President thinking. Carter actually endorses such a proposal remains to be seen. I will fight against any such proposal. But the underlying tone, the fact that such a proposal was even made, indicates the direction many in the country would want us to take. To many in the eastern United States and in the large urban centers throughout the country, public lands are viewed as national parks, to be preserved and used by a few, but not to be disturbed in That thinking is any way. understandable for there is precious little natural land left in the east. But that thinking should not influence tbe management decisions we must make on the vast public lands in the west; We all see the television documentaries showing huge trees tumbling to the ground in a logging operation. To many, the cutting c4 a tree is a terrible affront to nature, and the wanton destruction of a living thing. To those of us who understand, the harvesting of mature timber is a necessary use of a natural resource. The very paper this article is printed on was once a tree. The American dream of a decent home for every family depends on harvest of trees for lumber. Of all those who should appreciate the timber harvesting on our national lands, it should be the bureaucrats in Washington. They undoubtedly waste more paper than anyone else. Too often we are shown the bad examples. We are shown a hillside which has been harmed by d vehicles and the answer is to demand that they be banned from all the public lands. We have been shown examples of a bad timber clcarcut and the blanket answer is to halt all clcarcutting. I can show examples of bad legislation passed by Perhpas Congress Congress. should stop legislating. We would all agree thaf there have been abuses in the past. Vety off-roa- sy Martin A. Many Americans do not yet understand, but all should, that almost every time they visit a grocery store, they are making a direct contribution to Jewish A large proportion of all goods sold in cans carries a small K or U insignia. These have been forced upon manufacturers under threat of boycott. The December issue of Christian Vanguard states that since every can of food bearing these insignia involves a contribution to a religious organization, this is deductible from taxable income. Since no authoritative Source will divulge just what thi extortion amounts to, taxpaying families are advised to report deductions of S200 for this. purpose. If the report has already been made without this deduction, taxpayers should claim retroactive credits for the last six years. If S200 is too much, the IRS will be asked to make a precise and documented determination concerning the actual amount involved. Perhaps if there is enough publicity concerning this matter, will stop food manufacturers marking their goods with Jewish insignia and paying the tribute. In 1879 telephone subscribers were first designated by numbers rather than names as a result of a measles epidemic in Lowell. Mas- I sachusetts. We have set aside areas where the use of recreational vehicles is not proper. What we must fight is the notion that all public lands be closed We unless specifically opened. must assure that the public lands remain open, unless specifically closed for justifiable reasons. The bottom line is that increasing pressure will be applied to restrict the multiple use of our public lands. When the question of the Carter administrations position on postcard or mail registration, Bieging indicated that they had moved away from that idea because it had little impact on voter turnouts in states with those systems. Whether Vice President Mondale, picked by the President to sell his election reform plan to congress, will have any more luck with the federal lawmakers is questionable. Because of their closeness to the voters, the state lawmakers are expected to have a tremendous impact on what their representatives in congress do. Note. Instant and universal voter is the cornerstone of President Carters registration President package, and the suggested that taxpayers pay up to SS0 million to help states finance the system. Under Carter's plan, any citizen could appear at a local polling place on election day, show appropriate identification, swear to his place of residence and vote.
