It takes a mighty good bookkeeper to make a deficit look like a surplus. i Bulzs By Boo-Bo- o Robert M. Bartell WASHINGTON, D.C. (Liberty Lobby News Service) While weve never been completely enamored with the performance of Earl Butz as Secretary of Agriculture-after all, he engineered the grain sales to the Russians his forced resignation and the phony indignation of sanctimonious Jimmy Carter because of a remark Butz made privately are worth examining. Many people, particularly farmers, think Butz is the best Secretary of Agriculture this country has ever had. And it is true that during his tenure farm income doubled, exports tripled, 60 million new acres of farmland were opened up for cultivation and the cost of farm programs to the taxpayer fell by 75 per cent. He was never shy about protecting the farmers and his friends and he made many enemies when he enthusiastically attacked the food stamp program, environmentalists, Ralph Nader and Common Cause. Obviously he wasn't all bad, as Jimmy Carter would have you believe. It is difficult to understand why Butz made the remark he did to John Dean, the human tape recorder. Obviously, he felt his remarks were private and most of us at one time or another have told or listened to ethnic jokes with great delight. In any event, though it may have been barnyard humor, there was no malice, meanness or malevolence in Earl Butz and it is therefore with open-mouth- amaze- ed ment that we watch the man who would teach us compassion, love and forgiveness, kick Butz as he fell. Carter screamed that President Ford should have fired Butz in disgrace, rather than allow him to resign. If the puritanical critics who howled for Butzs scalp spent as much time discussing solutions to the multitudinous problems as nation this they did facing over whether they ought to print Butzs remarks verbatim, they might find willing listeners. stiff-necke- d, Reader's comments are welcome. Carter's favorite girlie ' magazine, "Playboy," describes Brother Billy as an "incorrigible cracker who still uses the word nigger when he's drinking with his old buddies at the gas station. . As Pat Buchanan, the national columnist says, surely "leadership by Carters standards, requires the immediate firing of this business partner who has revealed such a gross insensitivity. The "Playboy writer. who is doing the story on the Carters, in reflecting on Carter's announcement that he will bring a new, moral tone to the White House, said, "After spending four months traveling with the Carter team, ft becomes clear that Carter has not applied his concern with Ten Commandments to the behavior of his staff. They are, at least some of as them, fornicating, freethinking group as has been seen in higher politcs. Again quoting Buchanan, "The Earl Butz who departed this town was a more decent, honorable and moral man than the jackal pack of hypocrites who leapt on his indiscretion to destroy his career. - |
