Kershner Help Wanted Recently, we called attention to the number of Help Wanted ads running in city papers where the unemployment ratio is high, and to reports from employers telling of their difficulty in filling jobs. Much additional evidence is accumulating regarding this jnatter. Mr. Allan C. Brownfeld, writing in Human Events , January 17, 1976, reports that Californias Harbor Employment Office in Long Beach recently listed 32 openings for secretaries at salaries up to $860 a month; 40 openings for cooks, up to $1,000 monthly ; 37 openings for security guards, $2.10 to $3.10 an hour; and 70 openings for machinists and mechanics paying up to $7.50 an hour. There were scores of other jobs for clerical workers, retail clerks, domestics, vocational nurses, waitresses and beauticians. All this in a state with unemployment at that time of 10.2 per cent. The fact is, the ease with which generous welfare payments may be obtained has taken away from many people the incentive to work. If there was no welfare, as there wasnt during the first half of my life, all the able-bodipeople who are now jobless would go back to work. In my youth I was among the number who had to find work. I and all the others found it. Private charity is necessary for a short time now and then, but only for a very few people. The liberals claim to have compassion for the poor and the unfortunate. Actually, they are robbing these and encouraging depeople of pendency. Moreover, they are destroying the wealth of our country and leading us into socialism by way of the welfare state. The number of welfare recipients in New York City has doubled during the past ten years. One out of every seven is on relief. The best thing that can be done for the poor is a stable dollar, more capital accumulation to furnish more jobs, and a brighter prospect for the future.
