Show The Paper That Dares To Take A Stand October 23, 197$ The Utah Independent Page 5 cross iiito its title, chalked up Get US out! a $10.9 billion profit. That is Oil Company Ripoff By Robert M. Bartell much m6re than the annual budget of most nations. It paid its corporate ruler, J. Kenneth Jamieson, a salary more than three times President Fords. With such pickings Exxon is well able to face the fines that might be levied against the company from the anti-trucharges brought by Connecticut, Florida, Kansas and the Federal Trade Commission. Mobil Oil, another Rockefeller vorporation, netted $3.6 billion profit. It also managed to pay only 1.6 befederal tax last year-f- ar low the 49 standard corporate tax. Like Exxon, Mobil alst WASHINGTON, D.C. (Lib- erty Lobby News Service)-Wh- en the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries recently raised the price of crude they export by 10, the American public groaned; theyll have to shell out an additional $2 billion a year for gasoline. But the giant oil companies are jubilant; the new hike means additional profits. The only loser is the consumer. poor, Two years ago the Arab oil lands, Iran and Venezuela quadrupled the price of oil, confisthen nationalized-- at oil compancatory rates-t- he ies assets. The public was aghast. It was commonly believed that the consumer was not only saddled with a additional burden in the form of higher oil prices, but that the international oil companies were also badly crippled. And, in fact, the loss of the huge oil fields, with their trillions of dollars of proved oil reserves, was a grievous blow to the big companies. But it was not an immediate financial loss. On the contrary, the oil companies quickly recouped their loss on overseas operations-a- nd went on to make additional, profits. For emergency now, thanks to the Great Oil Heist of 1973, the oil they pumped from their American oil fields is fetching three and four times more, and theyre making fabulous profits. The biggest beneficiary has been the giant, Rockefeller-controlle- d Exxon. Last year the firm, which had changed its name from Esso, perhaps to incorporate the double hard-press- ed multi-bil- lion so faced anti-tru- st charges, plus multiple air quality violations, environmental violations and oil discharge viola- tions. Compared with those very adroit corporations. Gulf, the oil company of the fabulous Mellon family, whose profits soared a fantastic 440 during the 1972-7- 4 period, appears poor but honest, havfederal ing paid almost 5 tax on its $3.9 billion net profit. Gulf also is fighting charges of environmental violations and faces a rap for illegal political contributions. l, The Texaco empire in 84 operates countries, with its own fleet of 205 tankers and 37,000 miles of pipeline. Last year the company paid less than 2 federal tax on a $2.8 billion net profit! It appears as if the greasy fingers of the major oil companies are dipping into' Uncle Sam's pocket. Judging from my gasoline bill and my tax bill, Im sure their fingers are in my pocket. How about yours, fellow taxpayer? multi-nationa- multi-billion-doll- ar Readers comments are welcome. McManus The most basic and Belmont, Massachusetts fundamental premise of Americanism is contained in our Declaration of Independence. There will be found statements which affirm that men . . . are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights . . . and that . . . to secure these Rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just Powers from the Consent of the Governed. Clearly, these straightforward assertions establish as a basis for our system the truths that there is a God; that rights come from Him, not government; and that government's purpose is to protect and preserve the rights of man. Included with these basic beliefs is the parallel certainty that government is the servant of the people, not their master. self-evide- as are prescribed by law. and restrictions The U.N. assumed the power to grant the right, and then qualified it out of existence before finishing the sentence. Another article reads: The right of peaceful assembly shall be recognized. Sounds great until we get to the next sentence, which states: No restriction may be placed on the exercise of this right other than those imposed in conformity with the law . . . . Further on, we read: Freedom to manifest ones religion or beliefs may be subject to such limitations as are prescribed by law. And so it goes. The U.N. supplants God, assumes power to grant rights, and then takes them away in the very same nt breath. God-give- n Our Bill Of Rights By contrast, our Bill of Rights assumes no power either to grant or to take away mans personal rights. According to the American Constitution, no one especially the has or should have such power. government Hence the wording: Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble . . . . The difference between the U.N. way and the American way is irreconcilable. The Philosophy Of The U.N. God-give- n A completely opposite underlying premise d d can be found in the but Bedocuments of the United Nations. cause the U.N. always has totally ignored Gods existence, it has never believed that mans rights come from his Creator. And since, in the U.N.s view, the world body itself is supreme, it should come as no surprise at all to witness the organization assuming the role of the Deity in dispensing rights to man. Equally unsurprising is the assumption by the U.N. of additional power to suspend or revoke basic rights. In short, the U.N. has set itself up as a completely arbitrary giver and taker of what our founding fathers called unalienable Rights, which they correctly identified as having come from God. much-heralde- little-studie- Which Do You Choose? Unlike so many people who already live under a totalitarian system (the Soviet Constitution is written just like the U.N. Covenant), we in the United States have a choice. We can continue to enjoy God given rights which cannot be usurped by government, or we can slide United Nainto government by an tions. There are some who insist that the world body is worthy of support in spite of its manifest deficiencies. But because the U.N.s foundation is an invitation to tyranny, the attitude of any true American toward it must be: Get US out! -- ul U.N.
