Pressure is beginning to build up in Congress for the President to. act. Representative Melvin Price (D.I11.). chairman of the powerful House Armed Service Committee, and Senator Jesse Helms (R. N.C.) have called the White House urging the President to take emergency measures to rescue these Vietnamese. ' Former House Speaker John McCormack, Boston, Mass., has made several telephone appeals to members of his own party in Congress to call on the President to send U.S. naval vessels to protect the refugees on Phu Quoc. So far, he has been unsuccessful in reaching the President or breaking through the iron curtain ' that Kissinger has installed around the President. Warnings have come to the White from House other lawmakers that the failure of the Ford Administration to help these 42.000 Vietnamese could turn into a worse scandal than Watergate since the U.S. inaction will doom tens of thousands of these refugees to certain death. i This writer spent most of Friday afternoon last week at the White House making a direct appeal to two of the Presidents top advisers on behalf of these Vietnamese. Promises were received that the matter would be put directly to the President but so far there has been no definite indication that this has been done. Significantly, it was the U.S. Navy that was used to rescue most of these refugees from North s. Vietnam in the It was the U.S. Navy that helped evacuate them from the Northern and Central regions of South Vietnam mid-1950- when the Communists earlier this year overran their new home. Will the Ford Administration stand by and let these refugees be slaughtered because a fifth rate. Hitler-lik- e dictatorship threatens to bomb our warships? If America allows this type of blackmail, we are no longer a great nation. We are a nation that does not deserve freedom that we the God-give- n now enjoy and take for granted. Is it not now the time for all Americans, who love freedom, to answer the call of these pleading, begging, crying refugees on Phi Quoc by wiring, writing, or calling President Ford and our representatives in Congress to demand that the U.S. Navy be used to save these refugees? The hgur is late but there is still time and hope, if the President acts immediately. Can we do less and still honestly celebrate the 200th birthday of the greatest Republic that the world has ever known a Republic which came i into being with the help of the French Navy at the historic battle of Yorktown. The challenge is before us. VIETNAM FALLOUT South Korea, Brazil and Chile have offered to take a number of the refugees from Phu Quoc once they are rescued and out of danger....Two Soviet aid ships arrived last week at Da Nang, 37S miles north of Saigon. The Soviet transport ship. Nina Sagaidak, with a cargo of food and arms, was the first foreign merchant ship to dock at Da Nang since it was taken over March 29 by the North Vietnamese. Another Soviet vessel, the tanker Komsomolets Primorya, arrived last week with cargo of diesel oil for use as fuel in power stations in Da Nang. Inflation is the result of government giving something for nothing: all those billions of dollars handed out for nothing, dilute the value of the dollars we spend for something, so that it takes ever more dollars to pay for anything. Living wages and minimum wages are something for nothing, if theyre above the worth of the work done by those to whom they are paid, and like all the other schemes of the consumer exploiters, they make us all pay more for less. Whatever government gives for nothing, government must take for nothing. Whatever criminals take, the victim must give. Something-for-nothing always requires at least an equal amount of nothing for something. George R. Simpson, Chairman Product Safety Consumer a Senator George McGovern United States Senate Washington. D.C. Commission Dear Senator McGovern: Box 8137 Washington, D.C. 20024 I You have invited response to your actions on the Controlled edict Substance concerning Handgun Ammunition. I do not own a handgun nor do I have any of its ammunition. But in view of the implications about this matter, I feel compelled to voice my opinion, inasmuch as it violates the Bill of Rights and is contrary to the Constitution as guaranteed by the founding fathers for the safety of the people. I have read the Bill of Rights and the Constitution and know its I might ask. have you? rules. Everything in those papers is just as viable as when it was first written. Nothing has changed except TIME. We call ourselves modern, but are we as modern as we think we are? Handguns and guns do not kill. The killers are the ones who hold the weapons. If there is any need for controlling something, why not control the criminal and enforce the laws that were set up in the first place for this reason? I do know you and those who are trying to force this upon the people, really know the blame for any criminal action is the criminal himself. New York State has had a No Gun Law for years and their criminal violators have built the biggest record of criminal action in the United States. Controlling guns or the ammunition is not the answer. The judge who invoked this action had better look again at the laws concerning the criminal. It is his type who set the criminal free after the criminal has been arrested. The police have done their work, but they cannot alter the judge who turns the real criminal loose. They are working against odds when the Liberal Courts thwart the action of the police. Criminal actions will never be stopped unless the courts do their parts in this program of crime. It is time the courts become a part of our nation, instead of working against it. In the past few days I have noted with great interest the attitudes of these same people of South Vietnam. When the part of the country that they call home was being overrun with Communists, these people fled for safety in parts of the country still controlled by the government of South Vietnam. I noted that there were riots in getting to safety, in finding a place on planes leaving the places being endangered by the Communists, and I even saw pictures of people comments Dear Mr. Simpson: and hanging on to the outside of airplanes flying for safer places. These people were desperate in fleeing the Communists and in asking the official government of South Vietnam to protect them from the Communists. Now Senator, can you please enlighten me on why these people will flee one group of people and ask the government which you said was corrupt and did not have the support of the people to protect them? Again I have heard you for years make these charges and now to see what is happening is almost unbelievable. I have heard you also say the same about Cambodia and the same thing is happening there. I will be anxiously awaiting your reply. Thanking you in advance. I remain Sincerely, Dr. John A. Bleeker Red Lodge.
