D";, io Take A Stand The Independent Dedicated To The Constitution, Liberty, Morality, and Truth Free men can vote themselves into slavery, but slaves cannot vote themselves free." J. Reese Hunter Editors Outlook J. Reese Hunter Some people think that it is wrong to be against everything that is proposed by the legislature. It is that type of psychology w'hich influences certain otherwise rational people to take sides 50 this or 50 that in order to not be labelled. We dont mind being labelled since w'e are always going to be found working to promote individual freedom and to keep government within its constitutional bounds. In our opinion, we have been on the retrograde path, insofar as freedom is concerned, since the Founding Fathers. For one moment in history these men were able to come together and unite on principles of government designed to guarantee freedom through keeping government, itself, under control. Today, promoters of legislative schemes can actually lie to the people (we dont think they are stupid, therefore, it must be deliberate) with impunity and still be regarded as statesmen in government and stalwarts in church. For example, promoters of federal Revenue Sharing have told the people it will help local governments to get free from the tentacles reaching out from Washington. In actuallity, just the opposite is true. They will be drawn to further dependency upon the central government in Washington when Congress is paying more of the bills. On the state level, these statesmen beguiled the health departments into people into consolidating their one gigantic department. The beguiling was done with another lie economy in government. Governmental consolidations do not result in economy, they only create larger and more expensive government. The people, once again, had to pay for that by increased taxes and loss of freedom. Today, the promoters of the four constitutional amendments are once again telling untruths in order to trick a people who seem to be limitless in their gullibility. They are telling us that passage of these amendments will result in government being closer and more responsive to the people. Again, just the opposite is true. Each of these amendments will either create bigger government further from the people or will directly violate individual rights. In the case of Proposition 3, it would perhaps be more accurate to say that the promoters are indulging in They are leading us to believe that they are only trying to keep from having to form new school districts in the future. That is the The whole truth is that they are after the power to consolidate local city school districts into a larger district, or, to even make a county-wid- e super district. They are in the act of creating big government and are attempting to get the general public to have a hand in it. This is a Metropolitan form of school district. The education of our children is already being taken from the hands of the people. Creating larger school districts is no way to firm up local control. It is, in fact, the very process by which local Going to Get Off the Ground? are created, control will be annihilated. When these if this passes, you are going to see children being bussed to distant schools from one end of the county to the other. We are not saying it will happen this year or next, although it could, but the groundwork will have been laid. Losing freedom and losing local control of government has a way of creeping up on you. Before you know it, both are lost and there is no way to get them back except by bloodshed. If we once keep these schemers from getting their foot in the door we will have w'on the battle to preserve freedom. These amendments are the beginning step toward bigger and more tyrannical government with its attendant higher taxes. There is an old proverb which says, The journey of a thousand miles must begin with the first step. This journey, which ends with the loss of liberty, is one which we' do not wish to take. So, vote NO on Proposition 3 in November that those who despise your freedom will not be allowed to take that first step. super-distric- A so-call- ed city-coun- ty half-truth-s. half-trut- ts Prediction We Predict We of the Utah Independent are going to go out on a limb and make another prediction. The prediction is this: that, in spite of the vote on fluoridation, the Board of Health will try to go ahead with it anyway. We predict City-Coun- ty In other words, even if the citizens vote overwhelmingly against it, the Board of Health is going to vote to institute fluoridation. However, they are working hard to get us to vote in favor of it so they will have a favorable consensus. But, with or without it, they are determined to go ahead. Why would we make such a prediction? After all, are not the members of the Board of Health honorable people in this community? Look at the ballot on fluoridation. It says at the top, Fluoridation Survey. The questions are as follows: h. It reads: This poll is not a part of the official ballot of Salt Lake County but is a public opinion survey on the question of whether or not Salt Lake County and all of the Municipalities thereof shall fluoridate the Culinary Water used in the County. This poll is not a referendum and therefore shall not be legally binding upon the Governing Body of the County, any Municipality or the Health Department. Why dont they buy our grain and other products with gold instead of this country issuing credits that may never be repaid? We need gold because there is about $65 Billion in short term paper outstanding against our $10 Billion in gold. We are overdrawn ! U.S. taxpayers are being forced without their consent or knowledge, to put up the money to finance Communist purchases. The U.S. Commodity Credit Corporation is issuing credits to the Soviets right now up to $500 Million. past Judging from Russia will performance, probably repudiate this loan, and you and I and all the rest of the taxpayers in the U.S. will so, higher pick up the tab are taxes coming. The Russians now owe West Germany more than $1 Billion, which is being repudiated. France is also stuck for a large sum. Lets get smart for a change. Sincerely, C.C. Here is what County Commissioner Philip Blomquist said at the Board of Health meeting, September 7, 1972, in answer to the question, Will we assume that the poll will determine what position we Board of Health are going to take on this matter?: I dont think so.
