Governor Williams was because of an official resolution signed by Governor Williams Birch John Day. observing Irving V. Tennant Kingman, Arizona Scott Given Unusual Editor: In the news recently, concerning the protest of IRS tyranny, there are other important facts that should be told. When Jim Scott , chairman of the TAX REBELLION COMMITTEE, was arrested by four IRS agents only one would show his reluctantly identification. When Jim asked to see; the warrant for arrest, they said we have one but would not produce it. Then, his bail was set at $10,000, which is extremely excessive, and to top that they offered to reduce the bail to $5,000 if he would sign a' statement that he would not talk about tax rebellion again. It seems that all this and other things have been a denial of this mans constitutional rights. It has been said, and rightly so, that we must support our country. All of us want to shoulder our share of responsibility. But, when taxation becomes excessive and abusive, and the supreme law of the land is not upheld, we the people have the right to do something about it. In Jim Scotts case he took the action of refusing to pay income tax as a protest. He believes that the I Now is the hour of the conservative. Did you ever look around a month or so before election and try to find a liberal? Youre right, none available. Gary Allen pointed out that Americans have consistently tried to vote for the presidential candidate they thought was the more conservative in his approach to government. If the American people want conservative representatives, and almost all politicians profess to be conservative, why have we been racing down the primrose path of socialism like a steam engine with a broken governor? we accept the dictionary definition for conservative as tending to preserve established institutions and a constitutional conservative as one that will try to preserve our constitution, then, of course, we must know our institutions and our constitution to know where our representatives fit. The problem is simple with incumbents, just look at the voting record. Does the record tend to preserve or destroy our institutions, our constitution? If you do not know the voting record of remember that just a handful of patriots ever growing in number with a burning desire for freedom, liberty; and justice, pledged our lives, our fortunes, and our sacred honor against George III and his empire. We have a great and wonderful Republic which has grown for 200 years under free enterprise and democracy. Now comes the people we have elected to administer our countrys affairs. They pass laws, trample, laws, bend laws, and circumvent laws to the point that it is not only unconstitutional but immoral. And they come from both sides of the political fence . . . suffering from delusions of grandeur, forgetting who is master and who is servant. Thomas Jefferson said, from time to time the governed must remind those who govern just where the power lies. In other words, we must stop the tail from wagging the dog. It started here in 1776 with such men as John Adams, George - ' Washington, Nathan Hale, Thomas Jefferson, Samuel Continued on Page 11 t Bruce Bangerter American Independent Party candidate for congressman from the 2nd Congressional District Spending, Taxes, Inflation apprently are three good reasons why the powers behind our government would want to push for higher and higher spending limits. First, with each new outlay we socialistic programs than ever pay for more before. This coincides with the trend towards the tightening of federal controls, the expanding of bureaucracy, and the bringing of government closer and closer down our necks. Second, to partially pay for all this, we face an far-reachi- ng - The UTAH INDEPENDENT 1 1 t Page $ IV (1 I tax burden. Along with revenue sharing this makes us and the states mere pawns of the federal government. Daniel Webster once said, an unlimited power to tax, necessarily, involves the power to destroy. And, being destroyed is the will of the people, the sovereignties of the states, and the autonomy of our local governments. Third, the government always spends more than it dares to tax the people. So, we have deficit spending and from this we get inflation and increased indebtedness. When we have deficit spending, the government always has to borrow money to cover it. This is usually done by selling bonds to various banks. These banks, in turn, resell most of these bonds to the Federal Reserve. And, the Federal Reserve merely asks the government to dollars of new bills for the necessary print up amount. This is like taking a million dollar corporation and doing a stock split. Each stockholder ends up with twice as many shares, but since the company is still worth only a million dollars, the shares become worth only half as much as before. So, when the government increases the money supply without a change in net assets of the nation (or world), the total value of the money in circulation remains the same. And we accordingly have a reduction in the value of the dollar hence, inflation. But, perhaps the most shoddy scheme of all is that involving the Federal Reserve System. The Federal Reserve is a privately owned corporation that has a special deal with the U.S. government. Whenever it needs money to purchase government bonds, the government prints up the new money on government paper on government presses, and turns it over t3 the Federal Reserve free of charge. We then become indebted to the Federal Reserve for this amount and begin paying interest on it; compounded annually, to boot. No wonder the financiers behind the Federal Reserve want us to spend like crazy. Theyre racking up billions for nothing at all. And, by getting the nation deeper and deeper in debt, they have the right someday to foreclose on us, and every man, woman and child will have to give up everything he owns to pay for it! AS A CANDIDATE, my position is to (1) turn ownership of the Federal Reserve over to the United ' States government to avoid owing on and paying interest on the amount that is printed up; the. (2) have the '.government stop printing, extra money except when necessary to compensate for a net increase in our national assets or to replace worn-ocurrency; and (3) to advocate a return to the gold standard to back-u- p our currency nd to stabilize the American dollar. A look at income tax laws, Occupation Safety and Health Act, Environmental Control Act, and many others will tell you of the extremes that liberals will resort to for the good of the people. Laws are always enacted for the good of the people. It is you who must decide whether or not these are good or bad laws and that is done each election day. Remember, freedom is only safe in the hands of God, it is never safe in the hands of politicians, hence, requires your constant attention. I favor getting government into the business of protection, which was its original function. Protection by police (independent of federal control) from the criminal within and military protection against the enemy ftom without. The more government strays from this task the poorer it looks after its one, indespensable function protection. of the laws My guess is that more than 75 considered are given credulity by extremely liberal interpretation of the general welfare clause or similar reasoning. I do not believe the framers of the constitution intended that this clause was meant to cover everything from mans landing on the left side of Pluto to curing ingrown toenails. By this I mean, day to day voting records and not statements the day before election. If the person is not, an incumbent the problem is more difficult. You must study his statements, associations, basic philosophy, etc. If he can convince you that he is most conservative in his views then trust him with the office, temporarily. Why temporarily? Because this is the only way you can find out what his actual views are, where he will really take the nation, the state. Please note, I stated that you should trust him with the office which does not mean, nor promote the thought, that you should trust politicians. It is the unnecessary delays and extensions of time which the judges allow the litigants. It has become so burdensome that one individual may appear before a judge many times before actually coming to trial. Supposedly, another American principle of law is the right to a speedy trial. Our judges seem to have forgotten that one as they allow delay after delay in case after case and then complain that our courts are clogged. As Mr. Walton asked, Why dont they bring them, to court quick and have the judge get it over with? If that were accomplished, the guilty persons would be in jail where they belong and the innocent would be protected from unjust laws such as Proposition 2 would become if enacted. We urge all citizens who value their rights to vote NO on Proposition 2 in November. . ut MIV |
