J. Reese Hunter Editors Outlook ' Were Rooting Congratulations to Utah Republicans for Bobby J. Reese Hunter The American press, radio, and television, in general, have pulled out all the stops in their attempt to vilify and embarrass Bobby Fischer, Americas hope at the international chess match in Iceland. Even Utahs own Deseret News walloped him one editorially as they cheered on his Russian opponent, Boris Spassky, in an editorial July 21, 1972 entitled BEAT HIM, BORIS. Said the Deseret News , Everyone is supposed to admire a winner, and Americans naturally pull for fellow countrymen. But in Bobby Fischers case its easy to make an exception. " With each new childish demand the American chess be and there seems to be no end to them champion makes attains new levels of perfection in creating enemies and alienating people. . . . With each new antic by Fischer it becomes harder to fight off the hope that Russian chess master Boris Spassky beats him. Now, all of us must understand that Fischer is the underdog in this match. He is contending with the champion of the world who comes from a country where chess is taught to its children practically from infancy. Furthermore, Spassky is a subsidized employee of the state who is supplied with all his needs, including by the score who act as his seconds. Bobby grandmasters Fischer, on the other hand, has only one second. Spasskys seconds can spend all night analyzing every possible move which can be made while he gets his sleep. Fischer also has suspected them of flashing signals to Spassky from the audience. Fischer, with only one second, must no doubt spend part of the night doing the analyzing himself. Chess is a game of war. Fischer has not simply been beating Spassky at chess. He has been beating the Russian at the game the Russian communists play best, namely, psychological warfare. It tactics have been successful as appears that Bobbys psy-wSpassky has made one mistake after another, unbecoming the champion that he is. We would like to see the American press speak out against the childish demands made by the communists as they engage in their psychological warfare which we call peace talks. However, the press is strangely silent about that. But, when one lone American begins to beat them at their own games, chess and psychological warfare, the press rises en masse against him. If President Nixon and our State Department were to take a lesson from Fischer the communists would have been routed long Fischer ago. Of course, there is one big difference between them The Republican Party of Utah is to be congratulated for most of the planks in its recently adopted platform. We praise its opening words which begin: In preparation of this Platform we have invoked divine guidance, for we believe that all rights of man come from God, and not from the State. We agree with William Penn that those people who are not governed by God will be ruled by tyrants. If therefore any of the planks of this platform seem inconsistent with the will of our Creator we pray that they will be overruled for the welfare of our State and nation. Right thinking people of all political parties can applaud the Republican Partys planks in its support of Right to Work laws, for its support of Capital Punishment, and its courageous condemnation of the Supreme Courts usurpation of power in this matter. The Utah Independent favors the Republican stand opposing the liberalizing of abortion and its stand against bussing to achieve integration. The Republican Party platform takes a good stand as it opposes any legislation which would restrict in any form a citizens right to keep and bear firearms or the registration The plank calling upon the Federal Government to thereof. release in favor of the States certain taxing powers it has assumed is commendable. We wish, however, that at this point they would have made a concrete suggestion as to how to go about accomplishing this, such as the Liberty Amendment. We further wish that the Party had come out against Revenue Sharing since this new federalism will shackle the states further to controls and dictates from Washington. We felt there was a contradiction in the plank supporting the of President Nixon. The portion to which we refer reads as follows: on ar is out to win! Send change of address forms and correspondence to We further pledge our support to President Nixon by working to elect men and women who actively support Republican principles of government at county, state, and national levels this November. If that statement were consistent and sincere, the Utah Republican Party would have to reject Nixon as its candidate since, as the Utah Independent has repeatedly pointed out, President Nixon himself does not support Republican, principles of government and has almost totally repudiated the Republican Platform of 1968 upon which he was elected. President Franklin D. Roosevelt did the same thing to his party after his election in This 1932. serves to illustrate the inherent danger of political parties. People eventually tend to support the party rather than the correct principles. Except for that contradiction of principle and its across the board support for the forthcoming constitutional amendments to be voted on in November (about which we shall have more to say in subsequent issues), we of the Utah Independent congratulate the Republicans for their platform. Conservatives will be able to give a lot of support for most of the planks of that platform. We hope that those in office will support it with more than casual lip-servi- PERSPECTIVE 2459 Major Street, Salt Lake City, Utah 84115 Utah's Largest and Fastest-Growin- g Subscription Weekly 7 ik) nnt affve with a uvrd that wm say, hut I will defend to the ikxith. ynur right tn say it. " Vnhaire yffDook 3 Oposes Child Development Bill Dear Sir: The tenacious evildoers have succeeded in having the U.S. Senate pass S. 3617, the 1972 version of the child development bill approved by Congress last year but vetoed by the president because of aroused public opinion. Should this bill pass the House, it will surrender the responsibility of our children to a government agency. It will sell their birthright for a mess of pottage, for the Senate bill committee report on the specifically says: The Central is that child development programs must, in fact, be developmental . . . and not custodial in nature. So you requirement can see that the social planners in Washington arc quite serious about the governments raising YOUR children. Those familiar with the so-call- ed government experts do not relish placing the and psychological development of our nations children in their hands. After all, our children are our most valuable asset! All headstart programs, day care centers and various family services should be viewed with alarm. The Big Brother potential lurks in the background and 1984 could well have a premature birth. To date much tax money has been used by the government in the study of methods of child control through behavioral science. Such attempts to mold children in line with behavioral theories must cease for they are aimed at destroying the role of the individual in society. If we are to again be a strong, thriving nation we need the competition educational and imagination that individualism sparks. Collectivism can only spawn a fascist or communist society. This could be our lot if we turn our children over to the sociologists and behavioral scientists to be shaped into a Continued on Page 3 |
