J. This Budget Session has been no exception. A tax increase was voted for the school districts again. They are allowed to increase the property taxes from 6 to 12 mills. Almost all legislators voted for it except Representative H. Verland Anderson and Senator Grant A. Whitman (5 were absent). The legislature voted to increase government spending nearly S3 million more than even the Governor asked and he is no piker when it comes to spending tax dollars. As a result of this Budget Session we nearly had a free bus system and government-owne- d (HB-- 7). The House of Representatives voted 42 to 25 (2 absent) to bring the bill to the floor for consideration. If that had been a vote on the bill itself it would have passed the House by 7 more than the constitutional majority needed. Fortunately, a 23 vote is, required to consider it during a budget session. This type of thinking spells danger to us. You can rest assured that Representative Samuel Taylor, if will not rest until this is brought up again next January. And, if the Budget Session is any indicator, he will get it passed with votes to spare. Another government boondoggle to be supported by all of us. We had better wake Fortunately for the American people, but unfortunately for some American politicians, our Founding Fathers demanded a written Constitution. It was written clearly and is simple to understand. This was no accident. The first leaders of our country wanted the people to be able to clearly understand that the government should not be all powerful. They this by adding Ten Amendments called the Bill of Rights. The first of those amendments states that: Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion , or prohibiting the free exercise thereof This prohibited the United States Congress from establishing an official national religion, as existed in European countries. It does not outlaw God. It appears to us that Judge Willis W. Ritter has once again misapplied the powers of his office as he stepped in and ruled to haul down the tablet of Ten Commandments erected in front of the Hall of Justice. The statue was donated by a private organization. Judge Ritter dictatorially interposed his will a while back when he set aside the laws of the state of Utah for 10 days to allow a woman to have an abortion contrary to the up! laws of this state. With this latest Ritter ruling on the Ten Command- BENNETT SAYS "GODSPEED" TO NIXON Senator Wallace F. How can you commend an individual such as Jacobson who makes such unrealistic demands upon our public officials? And for what purposes? Certainly the mayor was not withholding anything, he was just being practical. Jacobson has an axe to grind because he did not want to participate in the sewer development. He could care less where the taxpayers' money goes or he wouldnt waste it on such irrelevant selfish demands. My hat goes off to Mayor Egbert and I certainly agree with him that an apology is in order. If everyone took that narrowminded attitude, where would we be in progress today? I have enjoyed many articles in your paper, but frankly this makes me nauseas. James D. Ashman D.D.S. Provo, Utah Editors Note: We appreciate Dr. Ashman's letter and we know there are others who hold similar views concerning the Willis Jacobson vs. West Jordan conflict. We have not, however , dent in his desire to visit mass murderers instead of changed our opinion concerning exposing his visit for what it is, shows a regrettable lack of the matter, and we do not feel principle on the Senators part. that we owe Mayor Egbert an apology. ATOMIC BLACKMAIL ? Sen. Barry Goldwater says that the world balance of military power has shifted to the Soviet Union to such an extent that international nuclear blackmail is no longer impossible; that while the Soviet Union is engaging in strategic arms limitation talks with the United States in Helsinki, it is quietly but urgently engaging in the most massive military buildup the world has ever known. The greater danger in the talks is that we might let our hopes for worldwide peace lead us into a carefully designed Soviet trap. I am saying we are no longer in a position of parity with the Soviets, Goldwater says. I am saying that the United States is well on its way to becoming a second-rat- e power incapable of assuring the future security and freedom of its people. The law clearly shows that public records are indeed public, and citizens have a right to examine them. When Jacobson took the matter to the courts, the defense (West Jordan) was at first unwilling to even admit that Jacobson bad a legal right to examine the public records. This is not rumor or opinion, but is a part of the court record. West Jordan officials have claimed that Jacobson's de- Contmued On Page 3 |
