Show November 5, 1971 The UTAH INDEPENDENT Page 9 lesbian who came to his attention. Then a friend of Westphal, named Karl Keinrich Ulrichs began writing on the subject. Being, a homosexual himself, Ulrichs defended homosexual love on the ground that it was a congenital or inborn tendency resulting from a female spirit being put in a male body or a male spirit being put in a female body. He urged a sympathetic understanding of the homosexual on the ground that these unfortunate persons could not help it, and this perversion was the normal way for them. Dr. R. von Krafft-Ebin- g was the next writer to appear on the scene. He was a professor of psychiatry in Vienna and wrote a book entitled, Pstjchopathia Sexualis. He looked upon the sexual psychopath as a victim of disease or a degeneration in the central nervous system. He also considered the possibility that environment might create a predisposition toward homosexuality. The major contribution of Krafft-Ebinhowever, was pointing out the need to discover whether homosexuality was an inherited tendency which the homosexual could not prevent or whether it was an acquired behavioral pattern which the homosexual brought on himself. Dr. Albert Moll of Berlin then entered the field to support the theory that sex perversion is inborn and therefore the homosexual cannot help but follow that particular route of sexual behavior in order to gain satisfaction. It was immediately pointed out, of course, that if this theory were correct then there is no hope whatever of curing the homosexual. Dr. G. Frank Lydston of Chicago contributed the suggestion that he saw evidence of there being two forms of homosexuality, one congenital or inborn and the other acquired. He felt this would give hope for the acquired homosexuals, since they could be changed. Edward Carpenter of England then came along and said that as a practicing homosexual he felt it was not important whether this perversion were inherited or acquired. He said the important thing was to have society recognize that it was a superior the type of sexual relationship. He claimed it exalted level of participants to a higher and more spiritual affectionate comradeship thereby fulfilling a beneficent social function. As far as he was concerned, o so-call- ed g, W. Cleon Skousen agreement among professional "authorities as to the cause of homosexuality. This writer believes there is a gradual trend toward the conclusion that homosexuality is a truly pathological perversion of a normal instinct, but there are plenty of authorities around who insist that it is compulsive, or inborn, or organic, or inherited, or congenital, eto. There are even those who insist that it is a more enlightened, a more advanced and sublimated form of sexual behavior than normal heterosexual love. One of the first serious papers on homosexuality was authored by Dr. Westphal, a professor, of psychiatry in Berlin.
