Delivery Anywhere in Intermountain In illustrating to the County I I & Commissioners that the opera was blasphemous, Breitling explained that blasphemy SALES consisted of (1) profane or mocking speech, writing, or for: I I AIR COM- PRESSORS PNEUMATIC action concerning God or and anything regarded as sacred, then (2) contempt for God. He read many illustrative excerpts from the published text of the opera. One passage he quoted very plainly indicated that Mary Magdalene was a prostitute and implied that she had had sexual relations with Jesus: Hes a man hes just a manAnd Ive had so TOOLS SCAFFOLDING LADDERS CONCRETE TOOLS PROPANE TANKS FILLED J many men beforeIn very many waysHesjust one more. Breitling saidTheto the Commissioners: play depicts Christ allegedly as seen through the eyes of Judas, but that is where the problem begins. Words, not revealed anywhere in the Holy Bible, are placed in the mouth of Judas and in the mouth of all the other players of the parts in this unholy spectacle. The words used are those of the authors and their own sources -sources which seem to be unknown to the rest of us. In one passage of the play Hes Judas says, Hes a man just a man; Hes not a king hes just the same; as anyone I know. Following Breitlings appeal to the County Commission, he presented his case to Salt Lake MARVIN L. COOLEY PRESENTS AN ALL DAY SEMINAR - Conrad B. Harrison (a member of the Salt Palace board of directors) and City Commissioner Tyranny In The Internal Revenue Service and How To Stop It!! then to McCown E. Hunt, chairman of the Salt Palace board. Both men agreed that the rock opera was repulsive. They seemed to feel that Breitlings cause was just but they could do nothing for him. Mr. Hunt decided that he would not call a special meeting of the board to consider cancelling the scheduled appearance of Jesus Christ Superstar at the tax-support- ed Salt Palace. In a September 26th article, the Salt Lake Tribune quoted the authors of Jesus Christ Superstar as saying, Basically, the idea of our whole opera is to have Christ seen through the eyes of Judas, with Christ as a man, not as a god. We purposely avoided any reference to Christs divinity, choosing to end our story with ... death rather than the resurrection. The Deseret Sews of August 7th quoted Rev. Austin Meekins of the Valley West Baptist Church saying that the opera is filled with misquotes, false quotes and complete distortions. One quote which drew particular criticism was when was speaking to Jesus: Youve started to believe the things they say of you. You really do believe this talk of God is Judas true. The obvious suggestion is Jesus doesnt know who he is or why he is doing what hes doing, One quote, from the song, Gcthscmane, portrays Jesus as not saying: I have changed.
